250-500cc Bike shifting automatically

I have been having an issue with 2nd gear. Sometimes when I am in 2nd gear it randomly goes to neutral without me touching the shift lever. I thought I could've hit the shift lever on accident but it kept happening when I knew my foot was not close to the shift lever. What could this be? It usually shifts to neutral about low-mid range in rpms. It only happens occasionally also.

the dogs on your gears could be worn. that will let it pop out of gear, and only affect one gear. my guess is you will need a few gears. possibly a bent shift fork but it would likely not shift well if that was the case

There's a thread about this being caused by a st screw coming loose on a part behind the clutch basket. Do a search and you'll find it. It's an easy fix.

Ok I will tear my bike apart either Friday or Saturday and post what the results were. Thanks!

It turns out the shift lever was lose so I tightened it up and I haven't had any problems since.

The bolt that holds the star shaped part to the shift drum comes loose on some bikes.
