Body armour

Last Sunday I went for a nice single track ride & ended up falling to the bottom of a ravine with my bike following close behind & landing on top of me. This is the result. Looks much worse a week later. Now the bruised area's are about triple the size & finding bruised area's I didn't even know I had a few days ago. Breathing hurts & getting out of bed is the worst, absolute torture.






I was wearing an EVS BJ22 ballistic jersey. But it has very little rib protection, especially when you get a footpeg slamming into your rib cage.. I shredded the elbow protection area & don't want to think what I'd look like without the jersey. But I'd like something better. Does anyone know of a protective jersey that has good rib protection? I also smashed my ribs last year & it gets old real quick, pain for weeks & nothing can be done about it. Hopefully something can be done to help prevent it.

So anyone have recommendations?

Falling to my right, I slammed into a partial tree trunk on some single track, ended up peeing a little pink pee 36 hours later. I got a $7 camping pad and cut it to fit the kidney belt on my Thor Impact Rig, no more bruised kidney for me.

That may be an idea. Hard to believe no one makes one with rib protection. It seems to be a common injury, & I figured since my EVS is kinda shredded now I'd look into a new one that already had the protection.

You must build your own set of armour. The old [swedish?]Stilmotor stuff was pretty good for the upper body but most have never seen it. It had front and back coverage with full arm and elbow pads. Wore it out with a few sets of coopercross moto pants.
I now use a set of hockey pants w the rear cut out ziptied to the hinged kneepads and run a hard lacross kidney/pelvis saver on waist. You need riding pants 2" bigger to cover it all. On the upper body I have a Hannah Racing Products chest and back protector w a set of hockey knee pads ziptied to the shoulder for when you smoke a tree, these run down to the elbow and then I have a set of hinged Bauer hockey elbow pads that make it almost down to the wrist. Add a Shoei helmet and a set of Sidi boots and you can jump out of a car on the freeway or endo pinned in top gear and live to tell the tale.

FWIW, I think your ribs looked worse when it happened than they do now. Your elbow looks worse now.

Definitely out. Those pics were taken Monday, the day after. Today the bruising area is massive, back to front on the rib cage & both elbows, Hate to say it, but I'm guessing a couple more weeks.

Video footage is pretty much a wash. Branch knocked off the camera before I biffed it, when I remounted it, it was way off, mostly sky

I've been using the Komodo Adventure Jacket and have experienced a few falls that certainly would have caused some pain but this product has saved me from injury.

Got some good feedback and the back protector is hieght specific to.

What I've found with this product is that it has collar bone protection which I've not found on any others. The collar bone straps have some adjustment for physique where those silver bolts are on the front and back. Also the shoulder protection is massive as is the elbow with substantial padding underneath. I've went down pretty hard on my old 510 a few times and got up and started riding right away with disbelief that I was not felling something broken or bleeding. The lower kidney belt pulls the back of the spine protector in close and holds the jacket in place from riding up during a get off. Just walking around wearing this flak jacket and a helmet gives you the feeling that nothing can hurt you especially after a few test trial get offs.. I think you can order one and try it on .. and send it back if it isn't up to your expectations. A friend of mine tried to find one last year and ordered one that arrived but wasn't the right size and was able to return it. He could not find a medium in stock last year. Appears that are available now.

Ouch! If breathing hurts and getting out of bed is horrible...good chance you cracked some ribs. Done it a couple times, and it takes a good month or so to heal up. I don't use anything that doesn't have some hard plastic on it for gear. I've learned the hard way lol.

My EVS BJ22 does have a lot of protection, just not enough. I'm glad it's got a built in kidney belt because I've got a huge bruise in that area also. Like I said, I hate to think what would have happened without the ballistic jersey.

P.S. When I smashed my ribs last year the overall damage wasn't near as bad, but the pain was. Had xrays taken, nothing broken, doc said I probably tore the soft tissue holding the ribs together & yes it took a long time to heal. Worst part is there is nothing they can do about it.
