Rear backing plate wobbles, and I have traced it to the bushing and/or sleeve in the center of the backing plate. The brass bushing (part 40 on fiche, no. 151660501) is obtainable but the steel sleeve that rides on the axle and mates into brass bushing is a bit more of a treasure hunt (part 30 on fiche, no. 151572501). I would assume the brass bushing would wear more than the steel sleeve, but I have no way to compare the tolerances to see if both are shot. So my questions are:

    1. Has anyone run into this and found another part that would work? The pre-1977 sleeve appears to look the same minus a lip that is on the '77-'79.

    2. Assuming I buy the brass bushing and try to use it with the old steel sleeve, how tight should that bushing and sleeve fit together?

The 78 has the same set up. I bought the last set from Charlie Preston at www.Husqvarna-Vintage.com here in the UK. Not sure if he has stock at the moment. Worth looking on his site or give him a call. There is also Phillip in the U.S. Also worth checking with Andy at HVA-Factory.
These bushes have a short lifespan if used in abrasive dirt. It is worth buying two sets. They are expensive, but a whole lot cheaper than having to find a new back plate.

Thanks, looks like Charlie has these.

I will be making replacement in my backing plates out of the same bronze that Kibblewhite makes valve guide out of. I have enough to make myself 3 bushings and 2 sets of valve guides for my TT500 engines. One is getting Inconel valves and those require valve guides that are smaller than stock

Are you able to make anymore of these bronze bushings? I am in Mass

I just make the bushing larger #30 to compensate for the wear on the brass bushing.
Some times a little longer to move backing plate away from hub sleeve, where they wear.

I am starting with a rod that is Ø1.625. There is more than enough excess stock to accommodate any oversize requirements.
