Marc Peters has built a replica of Carlsbad MX and GP track from his dad Stu's original 1960's CMC blueprints up at the Ranch in Anza. The "new" track opens this weekend May 7-8 2011. More clay/dirt is being added daily to harden up the soil to get the ground more in line with the original classic track. Break out those vintage Huskys !!! http://www.theranchanzaca.com/
http://www.vimeo.com/23441862 well it definitly has the feel*, the profile is there, but C-bad the original was uglier, especially the downhill, hard as rock with hard hit whoops on the way down into the left hand hairpin back to the uphill. (similar to GH only hard blue groove dirt) * from the vid capture (I was out trail riding)
I was out there on Friday, but the track wasn't open on that day so we had to amuse ourselves on the large variety of other tracks that were available. After looking at a few of the many videos of the GP replica though, I would have to say that they did a pretty good job....better in some places and not so good in others. Some of the most recognizable physical features looked a little off....and of course you have to have that greasy when wet, sticky when moist, concrete when dry soil to make it really complete. It would be a heroic feat to exactly duplicate the track. Considering the topography and the dirt that is available, it turned out very nice.
ok heres a question... what happend to the original??? i remeber watchin that race when i was a kid on diamond p motorsports american cavalcade back in the day when i was a little kid
It was closed down and sold quite a few years ago as commercial and residential development began closing in on it. There are roads and industrial complexes going across some areas of the property now.
the last time I was "there" was for a guerrilla assault on what was left of the track, for a Marty Moates memorial mini moto race. A large crowd showed, it was cool folks lifting minis over and under fences and some fast ex-pros on 80s and other minis. It really was an epic "event". I need to find someone with photos of that day. The start area and the northwest parts of the track were all that were left. found it http://motography.smugmug.com/gallery/2301782#120316638_upg45
