This issue has been slowly creeping up on me over the past week or so. I don't ride my SMS630 but 4 miles to-and-from work and I have noticed that after a couple weeks the bike would seem to take a lot of effort to turn over at the end of the day. So I would put her on a battery tender on the weekends.

I have had this type of thing happen before with a vehicle that I did the to-and-from work route before, or at least I thought. Now if the bike runs for over 20 minutes my battery voltage is so low (<9v) that the bike is shut off it won't turn over unless I use my battery tender to nudge it into cooperation.

I thought that it was a faulty battery. I was getting frustrated at the fact that the bike has <1600 miles on it and only 6 months old and I was having electrical issues, so I yanked the battery out to exchange it for a new on and I notice a little harness on the right side was positioned under my battery…. When I say positioned, I mean that it had to have been there from the factory/dealer because the battery had never been out of the bike.

I'm guessing that that goes to the voltage rectifier. Either way, by removing the battery I found a torn through harness and I found that my rubber strap that once held my battery in place decided it no longer wanted to be a part of my Husky and took the tab that held it to the subframe with it on its journey.

I was thinking I found the problem so I proceded to splice in new wires on the rectifier. To be specific, it was the 12 gauge red wire and one of the smaller yellow wires that were torn through.

Thinking life was grand again, I let my battery sit on the tender for the remainder of the day. The next day I installed the battery and hooked up a volt meter and took a trip around the block to plot the voltage. Every 15-20 seconds of riding at any RPM the battery voltage would drop .01-.02volts until the voltage was low enough for the bike to start missing.

Now, I know that my bike is still under warranty but my question is this: Would a BMW motorcycle repair facility be able to do warranty work or order parts for Husky's? Reason asking is that the nearest Husky dealer is in Riverside, CA and I'm in Las Vegas….

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have just read reports of this same debacle on a couple of other bikes - Just another example of SHODDY PRODUCTION AND FINISH on what is otherwise a great marque. Hopefully this will be addressed by the new Bavarian parents.

Had a similar issue with the battery constantly dischaging on my SMS630

Turned out to be a faulty voltage regulator not allowing the battery to charge while riding.
    Dealer replaced it under waranty.
Even though I havent been riding the bike much at all in the last few months, the battery is still holding up ok.

If the wiring was shorting out to the frame or something, it may very well have ruined your voltage regulator. That's the first thing I'd replace.

I'm in the process of pulling the bike apart to shoot for continuity from the stator to the voltage rectifier and then check for voltage and current coming from the rectifier to the electronic switch and battery.

I feel that the rectifier is the root cause as well but I want to make sure it is bad so that if this happens to any other 630 owner we will all know what the fix is.

I am still attempting to get the warranty to cover it as I am troubleshooting. I'll post my finds as I come across them.

Update: I did the quick and easy way to check a voltage rectifier. I pulled the rectifier plug and started the bike. I then checked for all three phases of AC coming from the stator. All polls of the stator were +14vac. I reconnected the plug after I removed pin that is the output side of the rectifier and while the bike ran I was showing 0vdc leaving the rectifier. Good thing its only a $67 part because BMW motorcycles will not cover warranty work on Huskys even though they are in the works to start selling them.

On a side note. I found that the hook that fell off my subframe is only held on by two very small pop rivets. I'm ordering a new hook and strap and its getting some good pan head screws to hold it this time.

I'd call a husky dealer and see if they'll ship you warranty parts. You do the work yourself, parts won't cost you a dime.

    I'll look into that.

UPDATE: Parts finally arrived today. It was the voltage rectifier that was the problem. Left the house around 12.6vdc and returned after a short 5 minute ride at 12.9vdc. All is well.

As for the battery tie down that egressed my moto, I received the new strap and tie down but instead of using new pop rivets I used some .5in stainless self tapping pan head screws. Much more sturdy than the original. So now, when I decide to get a couple lithium batteries instead of the factory Uatsa, I will be able to use existing hardware to secure them.

I also ordered a right side lower subframe bolt to go on the left side lower subframe mount so I can remove my passenger pegs. Reason being is that if you don't already know, is the when you pull the left passenger pegs off the subframe bolt is .25in too long and will make contact with the frame. Simple fix for a simple problem.

I don't remember mine contacting the frame. I remember it being very close, but not contacting. I suppose next time I think about it, I should just cut it off.

Take the left side bolt and use it on the right and the right side bolt and use it on the left. This will make it so the bolt doesn't hit the frame.

My right side bolt had the threads start too far down the shank and wouldn't torque down properly.
