My buddy is still in Taiwan and sending me pix of riding and new bikes. the New KTM Freeride comes with some Maxxis trails tires made for full on bikes that feature a wider knob pattern. I have been dreaming about something like this for a while. Very interesting.
Maxxis has made some cool stuff that we can't seem to get in the states. I remember a DOT knobby a few years back, that never made it here. There's a DOT Maxxis knobby right now that comes stock on some of the KTMs. This would be a great tire for many of us, if it hooks up like a trials tire on rocks and roots, but still behaved more like a knobby in gravel and turns.
Rear is a 4.00 R 18 M/C 64M TL - Maxxis Trialmaxx Front is a 2.75 x 21 - M/C 45M TT Maxxis Trialmaxx only web reference i can find is...http://www.motocard-bike.com/sp/moto/moto-maxxis-4,00_18mr_m7320_trialmaxx_64_tl_r.aspx
Oh man I like the likes of that tire! I was running a trials tire on my 610 and fell in love. I too have been dreaming of a trials tire with more space between knobs. My only reservation would be knobs ripping off.
raisrx251 has been in touch with Maxxis in Europe, to see if it will be released to the general public.... no straight answer. A similar option.... http://www.goldentyreusa.com/GT_255_256_TC_FR.html
I read a test from Trail Bike Magazine in UK about the KTM Free ride 250 and basically they thought this Trialsmaxx was awesome and you have to try it. I pretty much skipped the rest of the test and kept wanting this tire. I knew I was early on this but contacted Maxxis here in the U.S. and got a hold of "Tyler" He said he would see and to call back in a month or so. I called and sounds like he got shot down at the meeting. I think the UK importer said it was not available yet last time I checked. P.M. me if you would like Maxxis phone number to try and get this here in the U.S. I think this would be a big seller here in the U.S. for off road tires. I also tried KTM but since the bike is not coming to the US I had no luck.
Sorry, off topic but... Will your buddy be doing a ride report or anything? I'd be keen to know more info on riding in Taiwan and how to arrange bikes ect.
I'm seeing tires over here with that tread pattern... These are some off-brand company and I might try one since the cost is so low ... It would be a small blessing for me if they hook-up. Myself, I hardly ever dream of tires. Maybe my day has passed and I'm not hardcore? -- It has the large side knobs that will stop slide overs in turns on flat dirt\gravel roads that some of the non-knobby type tires lack.
Sorry if a dumb questions, what difference does the wider spacing make on a trials tire? I have been looking at trying some trials on my 450 and have seen how great they are in dry conditions. In mud and wet leaves my friends with trials seem to struggle. Would wider spacing help that? Again sorry if this is completely idiotic.
The golden tire looks good too but I googled it and couldn't find it here either... My gearsare spinning now I wonder if I could take my Pirelli MT 43 and remove some of the rows of lugs and create a similar pattern without ruining the tire. Probably not.
I got a new golden tyre yesterday from Ty at Zip Ty Racing it is the new gummy it has the knobs like a dirt tire but feels like a trials tire I have not mounted it yet Getting ready for King of the moto Last year Gram Jarvis used the Enduro tire instedy of the gummy at KOM because of the high speed sections where the gummy tire might fail, but he did have the extreme soft moose in that tire. But the moose did melt just before the finish and I believe that cost him the win. Wonder what his tire set up will be this year. I have been running the Dunlop Geomax 51 with a mousse all year in every race all over the 4 western states we race in. So far that has been the best set up I have ever rode on. Help me win a National # 1 plate for 2014
I run a Geo MX51 rear too. Been working good this year. Seems to be wearing better than the Pirelli mid soft I used to run.
