Hey all - I picked up an 07 SM610 last year, 9k miles on it now. Great forum, tons of helpful into that has saved my a$$ more than once; spring cup washers, woodruff keys, clutch cable adjustments, carb settings, etc. To the point, I am replacing the spring for the clutch actuator arm (not yet assembling the clutch or connecting the clutch cable) and I cannot determine whether the spring needs to be taught or a bit loose once the arm is inserted into the case. Do I need to compress the spring like with foot peg springs, or just slip it over the shaft? And if I need to compress the spring, what's the secret? I don't have any hair left to pull out....

The spring is there to take up the play, it needs to be taught. If fitting the shaft with the spring in position doesnt work, then you could fit it untensioned then hook the end over the actuator arm after its fitted, its not a very stiff spring.
When i was putting mine back together i had to turn the arm passed where it usually stops to get it to go in, which left the spring untensioned until the arm was fully seated. Thats the best explanation i can give, its quite difficult to explain. I didnt have any difficulty with mine, so youll be alright.

Thanks Weasel, sorry for the delay but I've been mucking with this damn spring and still can't get it taught. The issue is that if I get it tight enough the bottom part of the spring won't hold in place, it slips out due to tension. Another way to phrase it - should the spring make one full revolution when set in place? That's extremely tight if so.

    No need for apologies.
I went out and looked at mine and i can unhook the spring from the arm just with my finger, so thats how taught it needs to be.
The spring does not need to be wound tight, it just fits with the resting tension in it.
There should be a small amount of play between the push rod and pressure plate with the clutch engaged, the spring is there to take that play up, that is its only purpose. I hope this helps more than my last post.
