Anyone know why on a 74 CR250, the resistance on the clutch lever would suddenly become alot lighter and the clutch would not fully disengage? Clutch was working fine, and mighty stiff to pull two days ago, took a spin last night, and noticed the lever was much easier to pull. Some disengagement is still taking place, but not fully. You cannot stop the bike with the clutch in without killing it?? No adjustement makes any difference on disengagement, but adjustment will still cause the clutch to slip under high RPM. Clutch doesn't slip when riding, just will not disengage????

I don't know that motor at all, but it sounds like your clutch is coming loose inside the cover.
Get another opinion before you take it apart. But, don't ride it anymore until you get some good advise.

spot on Ron! Pulled the cover off to find a clutch spring locking tab, two washers, and two nuts laying in the bottom of the clutch cover! I consider myself lucky nothing found its way into the transmission! Two of the other nuts are starting to come loose. When the clutch lever was being pressed, the pressure plate was only pushing out on the side where the nuts came off, hence the easier lever feel. Not sure how they backed off, all of the tabs looked like they were properly bent up around the sides of the nuts, but evidentlly not good enough. Im going to use lock nuts on all of the springs, along with the folding tabs in putting it back together! Im just glad this was caught before a catastrophy!

    thanks for the help

Loctite on all internal fasteners. I think thats the same thing that happened to Murphs 390 and caused catastrophic damage.

You did get lucky ! I had a locking tab failure and parts did find their way into the tranny of my 75WR " Mag " clone . Locked the motor up and cracked the case where the countershaft sprocket is located . Had the case welded by a very talented welder friend and it lasted the 2nd half of the season . It took a year and a half to find a good set of cases which are presently in the bike . Much care is taken when crimping the locking tabs over now .

WOW! I feel even more lucky now! Unfortunate how yours ended up. Ive got s set of M5 Nyloc nuts and medium Loctite threadlocker. I figured to feel safe about it, the nylocs, loctite, and folding tabs ought to do it!
