I had some seepage out of the Magura clutch reservoir, and went to open the lid, and more spilled out. The clutch lever and reservoir are mounted 30 degrees off horizontal to place the lever in the correct place. Should I loosen the screw, level the reservoir, top it off, and set it back the way it was? Inside there is a black float. Do it top it off leaving the float in place? Noob!
i just turn the bar a little till it levels out or loosen the clamp as you described, or both. if yer talking about the cap seal/follower bellows stuff it back in till its unfolded. if there's a float in there (?) like a car master leave it or itll spill over after topping off when ya put it back in. (bike type?)
As stated- always level the master cyl.. before taking off the cap to check or add fluid. ENSURE you leave an airspace for expansion: fill with fluid so that there is no fluid 1/4 inch ( or 6mm) from the top ("airspace"). When you bleed- always backbleed. Fluid/ Never use Brake-fluid in a magura: you can use varients of mineral oil: fork oil, ATF, "Mineral oil", or stick with Magura Blood. Motrex and others are now making Hydro Clutch fluid too. I use ATF- did in my ktm and do in my Husky- no difference in feel or performance- Just more readily available... oh yea its much cheaper too. Here is Magura's short manual for refferance- but its also covered in Husky manuals if you have them.
Sorry- that is a seal for the cover and it also has "airspace" built into it- and allows for an airspace- That seal should be set aside when filling off along with the cover- then fill- leaving the 1/4 inch form the top. The seal/float-whatever... almost<but not quite> ensures you get your corect airspace I mentioned- cause if you overfill it will push some fluid off the top when you put it back on. BUT if you left the correct ammount of airspace it won't push fluid out on reassembly- make sence? If I had to guess- your master cylinder leaked out some fluid originally because it had too much in it- or it could have simply been a bad seal upon assembly and needed to be cleaned and reasembled- 9.9/10 if you top off correctly you'l be in good shape. oh yea- don't over tighten those little screws on the master cylinder cover good luck
Ditto to what the other guys said. I had plenty of 5W fork fluid in the shop, works fine. It may be an internal seal weeping. Just rebuilt mine and from what I hear, rather notorious for the same issue.
ATF???? Awesome - now then, which type? Dextron, type F or import? Ive gone to the local drug mart and gotten consumer mineral oil - its a tad thick, but worked. Baby oil was another option ive heard. But i like the ATF idea! Ive got Ohlins fork oil, but is probably more expensive than Magura blood. A friend of mine picked up 500ml for $40!! and took 2 weeks to get in.
AtF does come in many many many "types" these days/ I honestly don't know that it matters- but many types also can be used with other types these days too- goes way beyond DEX, F, Merc, and Import. That said, I have alway's used what is standard for me and common around here- Dexron or comparable synthetic. I own all Jeeps and those use a higher grade which is a ATF +4 . Specifically I have Royal Purple ATF (synthetic) in everything right now not as cheap- but I figure the Jeeps can share a few ounces a year. So I just use what I got. BUT if I was 300 miles away and got to a country gas station or borrowed some from a truck or farmer- I'd be looking for ATF Dex if there's a choice whatever type if there's not. That's what is cool. I have been with buddies in that situation so its convenient and makes life easier than looking for something like magura blood 400 miles away. I don't think it matters but have also never used types not compatible with my JEEP technically Dex is not recommended in my Jeep but has been used as well. Some things are not comparable some are just lower grades- good to know the difference. I just woke up sorry for the long winded much adew bout' atf. I am no expert on that subject anyway. just saying what I do For some reason- I don't like baby oil as a plan- maybe a trail fix- but not a plan. The pretty smell just makes me think its wrong. the Fragrance doesn't work as a detergent I assume.
