I'll be heading out to ride Moab the end of June (20th) and was wondering is it was worth changing out the antifreeze with a water-wetter product? From the sounds of it, a lot of the riding will be slow speed rock crawling and I don't want to worry about blowing coolant. But then if the 610 cooling system is good with the standard antifreeze, I'll leave well enough alone. Thanks, Dan
get a bottle of waterwetter and drain your whole system, through a WHOLE bottle in (dont pay attention to instructions) and fill with distilled water. (i use hose water, I see no difference). I run that in my 610 and when moving at about 50mph I can see a watertemp as low as 110 at a ambeint 86 degree day.
Distilled water is recommended because all the minerals have been removed. Thus, no hard water deposits in your system.
From what I've read it looks like it can't hurt to run Redline wetterwater and it might help keep the motor a few degrees cooler. So I picked up a bottle of WW and a couple of gallons of distilled water. Just need to remember to switch back to antifreeze when I get back, or at least before winter. Dan
I spent 2 weeks there in April ('07 TE610) with temps up to the low 80's. The fan rarely came on, and when it did, not for long. Rode Top of the World which is a slow very technical 8 mile loop and I have a coolant temp sensor also. No problems. The radiators seem plenty big for that temp range and workout. I run normal 50/50 coolant.
Moab at the end of June!!?!?!? The best coolant is not going, way too hot then. Prime Moab season is mid fall and mid spring w/ a bit if winter, but NO summer. Have fun sweating your a$$ off
I know. But we don't always get to choose the ideal time. I'll just keeping reminding myself "but it's a DRY heat..." as I melt. It'll be a real test of man and machine, but mostly the man.
I never let rain or heat stop me, ride on brother, ride on. Be prepared and you will have a great time. BTW I rode my 125 over my 250 as everything we did was pretty technical. I would have not liked it much on a 610 but if you choose the right trails you should be good.
Not much choice of machine either - 610 only - unless I want to ride the FJR... I'm riding with my nephew who will be on a KTM 450 XC-W so he's isn't on a tiny bike, but certainly lighter than the 610.
If you end up changing your coolant, also take the time to replace the crappy hose clamps that Husky used on the cooling system. They are very prone to breaking - put some decent stainless ones on there and you will be good-to-go.
interesting, never had an issue with them in many years. BTW i would not use Evens rad fluid as you can't just add water later. Use a water based coolant.
Frankly, after busting the fuel connection on the tank, I'm hesitant to do anything more to the bike, other than to fix the damage and put it back together! Which, BTW, I have all of the parts and thread tap and plan to start tonight. I used Redline waterwetter which just mixes with water and so I should be able to just add water if necessary. Dan
I've used Engine Ice and 7th Gear coolant in sportbikes. They didn't stay cooler sitting still in traffic, but when you got moving again, the engine temps seemed to drop faster. But, in the end, I think fancy coolant is highly overrated. I can't speak for the Huskies.
I had 3 break on 3 separate occasions (2 on the trail, one in the garage). After the 3rd one I replaced all of them with double-band style clamps. Maybe I just got a bad batch on mine...?
