• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

CR/XC exhaust question

White Husky

Husqvarna
AA Class
Hello

Could someone help me please to check whether the exhaust that came on my '83 XC500 is suitable?

There's a sticker on the silencer with part number 15-13-393-02 written on by hand. If correct, this seems to correspond to a 1985 CR250 silencer.

Here's a photo of what I have:
View attachment 2588

The dimensions are:
  • 14"3/8 long from tip to tip
  • The input bore is 1"3/8
  • The output end is 2" wide and 3" tall
  • The centre of the mounting bracket hole is 10" from the front

Would someone with a CR500 mind measuring their silencer to see if it's similar please?

I'm trying to quieten the bike down, so figure that if a 500 CR silencer is bigger it should be quieter. I may also buy a spark arrestor type silencer for non-closed-circuit use, so if anyone has any tips on what fits I'd appreciate them, for example has anyone tried an FMF universal TurbineCore or the SuperTrapp Univeresal Quiet? Or anything else?

Thanks
Lucien

Go to pvpcycles.com they have FMF silencers for vintage Husky's. If you look in the photo section it shows Husky's with them on.

I've used brand new FMF universal spark arrestors/silencers on all of my Huskies and other vintage bikes -- and there's no real difference -- they're still LOUD!!! Especially the Huskies and Yamahas...My LOUD theory comes down to the fact that these old bikes have cylinders heads that are NOT insulated like modern 2 strokes, therefore you get more resonance, more mechanical noise, and subsequently more Db from the exhaust. It's just a theory. I'm almost embarrassed to start my vintage bikes in the neighborhood. Even though theyre not as loud as the Harleys,, cruisers, and offroad thumpers they're still loud --especially my Husky 400's. I truly don't think it's really going to quiet it down alot, but with a FMF, PC, or Answer Silencer you won't have to worry about the silencer getting coked up with carbon and losing power like you do with the OEM K-type silencers

Thanks Frog - had a look and they're there. I can buy in UK for £100. A lot of money to spend if they don't muffle things down!

Thanks Skoalman. I was going to order a universal FMF. Have to think twice now. I was also tempted to get a OEM spark arrestor. If it's going to be quiet then I don't mind regular cleaning and repacking, as it's for occasional use.

I've also got a lead on a European company called DEP who used to make pipes for the Huskies back in the day. Apparently they still have the jigs and can make me a new tail pipe. Waiting to hear back on costing! Ouch. Won't be cheap.

Pro-Circuit are also having a look through their stock for me to see if any of their silencers will fit the measurements I gave them. I don't think they'll be quiet though, but hopefully quieter than a 250 Husky pipe (assuming that's what mine is).

Any more views or tips anyone?

Cheers
Lucien

Hi Lucien,

I can measure my '85 500 CR silencer tomorrow and let you know.

While I was at work it came to me -- the Dirtbike snorkle -- here's your answer for quieter times!!

Check this out Lucien:

silencer measurements

Lucien,
The silencer on my 84 500CR is 18" total length, 15" silencer
part. 3" long tube that attaches to pipe. It's 10-1/4 " from pipe
inlet to mounting bolt center.

Hope that helps :)

Measurements

Hi Lucien,

My '85 500CR Silencer measures as follows:-

1. Tip to tip: 18 and 3/8
2. Input bore 1 1/2
3. Output end: 3 High x 2 wide
4. Bracket to Mounting from front: 10

Just slightly different than yours...

Unlike John's mine doesn't have any other bits between it and the end of the exhaust... slips straight over.

Hope this helps.

Thanks John. Fairly conclusive then I think my silencer must be off a CR250. I think I'm gonna try the snorkel that Skoalman mentioned. Looks kind of weird, but if it cuts the noise then that's great for me. Further research also reveals that it's worth insulating the airbox (induction) and wrapping the expansion chamber (detonation). Hmm.

Thanks Stu. To get through its MOT mine had to have one of those db killers inserted in the end of the silencer, but it was literally like reducing the output bore to 5mm whcih of course increases the back-pressure which on a 2T is not ideal. Anyway it was causing all sorts of s%^* to spu out of the header pipe. To be honest I know the crank seals are not the strongest on these engines so I don't want to blow them. I'm sure I'm being paranoid.

I've emailed db-snorkel. I'll probably try other options also to find the best, so I'm still open to ideas. Funny, when I was 25 I didn't care about noise. Now all of a sudden I find myself considerate. Hmmm
