Hello I'm going to aquire crash bars for my terra Want to read opinions about those crashbars and help me to decide betwen sw-motech or altrider $ is an important factor too Thanks
Can't speak for the tr650 versions, but I have bars on my F800GS. For the GS, the altrider bars are $100 more, the most expensive around. I bought sw-motech bars before altrider existed, so I didn't have a choice, and after several years of use, they'd fared well. Last June, my rear wheel glided over an unseen leaf on a mountain twisty while at fully lean at 60 mph (my typical speed for that well known road). The rear stepped out 180 degrees and I went down. The bars slammed into my hand, fracturing my left radial bone and seriously damaging my basal thumb joint. Nothing was broken, but my range of motion in my wrist and thumb will probably never be the same. Anyways, the bars did their job in the crash, but they got skewed. They touch the body on the right and have a big gap on the left. I considered getting different bars and seriously looked at the Altrider bars, but I just don't see a reason to pay $100 more when the sw's did a great job with dumps on the trail, only being taken out by a nasty road crash (I rolled more than half a dozen times when I got tossed off the bike). The AltRiders look nice, but I don't see why they'd protect any better or survive better in more serious situations. So I bought the sw's again.
If you search google images for swmotech crash bars tr650 and altrider crash bars tr650 you will get a good number of different images to show the fitment and the protection offered. Both give some protection to the otherwise unprotected bottom corner of the radiator, which is the primary concern for me. I have the Altrider bars and they give me the peace of mind I need, but I'm not an aggressive rider and never intend to need them to protect my bike, but I have seen images of other people who have come off with these bars fitted and been happy with their results.
I low sided a month ago on pavement with only scratches to the Altrider bar. The crash didn't seem to move or bend it. That's my limited experience.
I have Alt Rider bars on my Super Tenere. Very solidly constructed and the fit and finish is top notch. Just as a way of comparison.
Sw for me. The fit is great, install real easy and cool little logos. Crashworthyness I can't comment on, got them after her first nap
Depends what skid plate you have? If you already have an altrider skid plate, you know their bars will bolt straight on, and same for the SWM bars will bolt straight on with the SWM plate. I have the B&B bash plate and got the SWM bars, which required modding the B&B, whereas Nev didn't need to with the Altrider bars and B&B bash plate. I don't know the compatibility between SWM plate and Altrider bars and vice versa.
I have the Altrider crash bars (fit well with the B&B bash plate). Had a low-side on a dirt track at about 50km/h & they lost a little paint but protected the radiator well & didn't bend or move at all
I have the sw motech and they are a very beefy setup. I didn't like the ALT because I grip the bike with my knees a lot off road and it looked like the ALT bars would be where I grip with knees. I also like the way the SWM tie together in the front. I have laid my bike down on large rocks more then I want to say, with no problem with the crash bars other than some missing paint. I have the Moose Racing skid plate and just had to bend the left side at the front down a bit for clearance. It actually looks like it was made to be that way.
Tork, Now im second guessing which crash bars I got.... oh wait I was already doing that without this thread.... Great look with the knobbies and all. Which Cycras are those with the dual color red/black?
I ordered the Alt's crash bars on the weekend and after reading about the mod that Alt's had done the first time as the bars tend to ride up the taper of the frame, was horrified that a Jubilee clip was the answer Then there was the metal bracket that gets wedged in the frame! So after a bit of deliberation desided to cancel. Still not had any reply from them so will have to wait and see if they send them
Some do, some don't. It's interesting that they behave differently. I got the bracket they sent out free and fitted it, but I rode several thousand km over several months without it before it arrived and they showed no inclination to move at all.
Hello, Thx for the offer but i live in Spain. I think that the P&P will be expensive. I have the touratech skidplate , it's not the best. After i have readen the posts, i think the SW-Motech is the best option, hera in spain in 100 euros cheaper. I had doubts because i thought it was less effective than alt riders bars but after comments it looks like a nice purchase Thx
Looking at the PDF on the the instalation, it seems that there are spacers which can be swapped about to suit the thickness of the sump guard mounts so that's simple. Just fit the top mounts and measure the gap for the lowers and either machine or fit the supplied spacers! Sorted
That is the same plate I have moose markets it as "MOOSE" but it is made by Richochet. I just get a better deal through a dealer on moose stuff. It will work with SWM just f Have to bend the left front edge down a bit or cut it off. I like it bent it lines up with the crash bar and looks like it was made that way.
