I bought what I thought was a 300 but when cleaning it today - i noticed a stamp on the left side (opposite of the VIN) that said 08.28. wr250. USA. Does this mean that this bike is a 250? It has new graphics on it so I cant go off of that. It has black excel wheels but those could have been added. I looked at pictures of the 08 250 vs the 09 300 and i cant tell by looking at them if there is any difference. Anyone know how i can tell for sure if this is a 250 or 300? Thanks. There has to be something different besides the motor but hard to tell just looking at that.

you should be able to tell just by riding it,a 300 has great torque and will rip your arms off once in the power.

certainly there is an easier way to distinguish. there must be some other distinguishing factors between the two bikes that i can identify without taking the head off.

unless they bought and installed a big bore kit ^^^^^^^^^^

pull the head off its easy.

    drain coolant
    take off the tank
    take the head mount off
    take off a couple hoses
    take out 5 bolt

get some new o-rings to put back on. itll take about 1/2 hour to do.

it could be someone bore the cylinder out also, if they did that its probably a 265 not a 300. like i said measure the piston or bore and all your questions will be answered and youll have a good ides what shape the cylinder is in.

If I recall correctly, and it's been a long time, I think the head on my 2009 WR300 had lettering indicating that it was, in fact, a 300.

No matter the VIN someone could have swapped the cylinder and head. If this is any help my 09 WR250 has cast in numbers 86823 and 2978 on the head but no stamped numbers. If you want to know for sure I think pulling the head and measuring the bore is the only sure way.

It has had 2 prev owners and I would have checked the title but it didn't have one. It came out of a non titling state.

Lankydog - thank you for that post. so i checked the number on my cylinder head and it is different. I found a parts manual on Huskys website and the number for the 300 cylinder head is HO673, which matches mine. so at least i know for sure that I have the 300 motor. Still find it odd that the frame would indicate 250. another puzzling thing is I looked up the part numbers for the pipe and silencer. My pipe (HO678) matches the 300 part number but the silencer is AO491, which is the part number for the 250 silencer. Anyone with an 09 300 can you check the number on your silencer and see what it reads. Thanks

Wasn't 08 the first year they offered the 300? It was just a factory (add-on) kit previous to that if I'm not mistaken. It's wholly possible that it was just stitched together from 250 parts at the factory.

09 was the first "factory" 300.

And there is your real answer... It was a 250 the day it came out of the factory therefore titled as such. 300 kit installed at some point as evidenced by the stamping on your head.

Wow I feel like a jerk after writing that.

I assume the frames are the same on the 08 250 and the 09 300. Perhaps, it just has a frame from that was stamped 250 but used to build a 300. 09 was the first year they introduced the 300. I found the dealer where the bike was purchased. I will call him Monday and see if they can run the vin and tell me what it was sold as. Not a huge deal as at least i know that i have the 300 motor. That is the most important thing. I dont think there was many differences. I know sprockets were different, silencer changed, a few more internal parts but for the most part, it is the same bike other than the motor. thanks for the responses.

Problem resolved. I figured out where the bike was originally purchased. Called and had them run the vin. Bike sold as a WR300. Still puzzled by the 250 stamp on the frame and silencer. thanks for the suggestions
