I have a Turbo City Borrego rear rack on my 610. I'm getting ready for the summer traveling. Last year I used Wolfman Enduro Saddlebags, but this year I have a slightly larger sleeping bag and tent for comfort, and I'm thinking I might need a bit more space. So I"m looking at the Dirtbagz setup. Would the Dirtbagz work in conjunction with my rear rack. Here's a picture of the rack:
That's why I'm looking at the Dirtbagz setup. They come with a frame that prevents that from happening. I'm just not sure if I can use both the Dirtbagz frames and the rear rack together.
I've got the Coyote bag by Giantloopmoto. I was also concerned about contact with the exhaust. I put the Hot springs heat shield that Giantloopmoto (http://www.giantloopmoto.com/products/hot-springs-heat-shield) offers on my Leo Vince can to ensure that there was no contact between the bag and the exhaust. I put 1100 miles on it in the last week in eastern Oregon with no melting of the bags.
I like the Giant Loop bags, but I want to keep using my Ortlieb Rack Pack and Motofizz Tail Bag. I don't think they'd work with the Giant Loop. Here's a picture of my bike fully loaded for a week long trip (with the Wolfman Enduro Saddlebags). I can probably make this work again, if I leave a couple things at home, but I already pack fairly light. Surely someone has tried to make the Dirtbags work in conjunction with a rear rack. I'll have to keep searching for pics.
Hey Jc I’ve got some questions for you if you don’t mind First; how were the dealings with turbo city? they have an "old school" 610 skid plate that I’m absolutely in love with.... More importantly, what is that fairing you have there?
Turbo City is great--highly recommended. I've talked to Tom a couple of time on the phone, and he's very knowledgable and provides great service . I had some of his products on a previous bike as well, and all fit well and worked well. I know the skidplate you're talking about. Someone on one of my other forums had that plate on a different bike and seeemed very happy with it. The mini-windshield is a Laminar Lip for a BMW Fundero. It's the one everyone puts on the TE610's. I decided to try it on the SM and it fit. It just attaches with super industrial strengh velcro-type stuff. It helps with the wind blast to the torso and shoulders, but not really the head. And I'm only 5'4", so if you're tall or have a long torso, you might not get as much protection. Still, I like it. My husband has a taller windshield on his BMW, and the buffeting is kind of weird. I like my Laminar Lip better.
I think the dirtbagz will work fine with that rack. The bags hang on the side and are supported by a frame that you will install. The bags are supported by straps that go over the fender. There is plenty of slack so you should have lots of options to thread the straps either under, through or over the rack. Another option for you is the dirt bagz cross bag that I have. They were running a special where this bag was like only $30 more if you bought the saddlebags. Well worth it. It would give you the option to pull the rack for camping trips and trust me, you can carry alot of stuff with it. This setup carrys all the weight down as low as possible. Very secure and easy to work with.
Love my TCI Borrego Rack. I also bought the Sequoia Tailbag from them(made by Cortech) which straps on with built in bungies making it very easy to remove if you're going to be riding tight trails as it's kind of bulky.
I have dirtbagz and a rear rack. The PO made a shield over the Leo muffler to protect it and the whole thing works very well.
+1 on begeberg's comments. I have a Pro moto billet rear rack and dirtbagz, they work well, but make it difficult to work on the tail section, primarily because there are so many bolt holes to line up, so once I got it set up, I pretty much left it alone. I was surprised by how durable they are, they have protected the bike from my many unplanned dismounts.
