My new 14 TE511 needed its charcoal cannister removed (California crap) so I did that. I plugged the hole in the EFI where one tube went, the went about plugging another hose, not taking the time to see where that hose actually went.

    Then I went riding.

After about 10 miles, I noticed the bike didn't want to idle very well. It actually died on my at traffic lights a couple of times, but would always start right up. I got home, and parked it, thinking how odd that was for it to not want to idle.

Today, took all the plastic off, and started tracing hoses. I discovered some interesting things. One of the hoses that I'd plugged lead back to the fuel tank. I could see it was actually the vent tube. So what I'd done is create a closed system with no ventilation possibility.

I cut the hose on purpose, shortening it. As soon as I made the cut, there was this very audible "sigh" and I could hear air being sucked back into the tank, through the opening in the hose I'd just created with my clippers.

Then it occurred to me... I'd done myself a huge disservice by plugging that hose, creating a vacuum, and making the fuel pump struggle against that vacuum. Which is most likely the cause of my idle issue.

So I took the bike back out on the road with its new breathing capability. Guess what? Totally different bike. No more idle issues. No more any issues.

I learned an important lesson. Don't plug things willy nilly. I know that, on one level, as I've been working on bikes for the past 40 years. But somehow, this one totally escaped me.

Glad I took off the plastic. I now know where all the hoses go. I actually like the look of the naked bike.

So there you go. If you can learn anything from this post, cool. If nothing else, at least I feel better making my "confession."

Here's my finger pointing out the cut hose. I chopped it at that point because it's downstream from the little filter, and if any fuel ever did spill, it shouldn't be a problem at that location.

And below are a couple more photos of the bike without the plastics.

Below is definitely my favorite angle to view the bike. And I'll just finish by saying if mods to the ECU map and a new pipe do anything close to what others say they do, this thing will fly. It already has wonderful torque, stock. And I love the close ratio tranny. What a great machine.
