What's the best way to mount the required safety flag on a dirt bike?

Are sand tires for the front worth the effort and money?

Any other sand dune riding tips are welcome.

most dealers sell a little angle bracket for the rear axle....

don't get a front dune tire....

Dune'ing wasn't for me.... to many clowns, to many drunk clowns, and the riding was fun for 30 minutes.... lol

    Have fun

I always mount the flag on the rear fender. Most of my friends say I'm crazy for doing that, but they don't ride dunes anyways.

Make sure your front rim lock is tight - no sand tire needed. okhusky.jpg

I started riding dunes about 40 years ago in the Imperial Valley dunes in SoCal,(Glamis, Gordons Well, Buttercup etc.). I had the best luck and most fun on 250cc & 500cc 2-strokes, 4-strokes not so much. I tried a paddle tire once and hated it. To me it was more fun to run a big, open spaced knobby with about 7 to 8 psi. As to the front tire just run anything with a good tall knob on it. You won't really be steering with the front end because your weight will be over the rear tire and most of your steering input will be done with your butt and legs. Keep the front end light, the power on and just sort of "suggest" to the bike which way you want to go.

All that being said I have not ridden in the local dunes for several years since the Republic of California started requiring you purchase a "dune pass" to ride on our public land and the safety flag requirements for dirt bikes which I consider to be complete BS. If I ride in sand these days it is down south in Baja where you can still have fun without getting stopped and cited by a BLM Ranger.

I'm not going on this trip, I'm setting up my son's yz450 so he can go to Little Sahara with his friends for 4 days. So far the set up is; Steel sprockets, rear paddle tire, spring mount flag on fender, 3 clean air filters, fresh engine oil. His bike has a few hours on it and is due for an overhaul which I will do when he gets back. Then he will be good for another MX season.

Yea no need for any different front tire. Paddle tire for rear a must, for flag mount go to Hines racing out of yreka ca. Go with a 5/16 flag the 1/4 break too easy, Hines also has quick release flag holders and tires. image.jpeg
