A while ago when installing autotune for powercommander I've made a massive mistake which I'm not proud of and possibly damaged the ECU. Instead of tapping into the taillight wire, I've tapped into the starter relay wire, resulting in the bike's idle rpm to fluctuate between 2500-4000rpms. Stuff that I ruled out: - TPS - I was strongly hoping this was going to be it, but after replacing the tps, same problem was still visible. - Idle Air Controller - It was a little bit dirty, cleaned it, no change. - O2 Sensor - Same problem persists with the stock sensor, w/ PC O2 sensor, w/o O2 sensor at all. I've called husky/ktm dealers in the 50 mile radius to see if any of them had the MOSS tool to track down the problem, unfortunetly, none of them had it. I've heard the bmw gs-911 tool is compatible with the tr650, so I called up a couple of bmw mechanics and was told that they use a different diagnostic tool at their shops. I'm guessing gs-911 mainly for consumer use and I don't really want to dish out $400 on something that I don't know how to use and I don't know if it'll help me at all. I've also tried contacting the "big boys" at husky and ktm to see if they could direct me to someone who can aid me with their bike, but the email conversation died down after giving them my information. After more online research, I found a person with a f650 dakar, whose bike displayed similar symptoms to mine. It turns out that his ECU was faulty: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/345744-HELP!-F650-GS-DAKAR-IDLE-PROBLEM And so this brings me to my questions. Has anyone needed to replace an ECU on their TR650? If so, do you only need to replace the ECU or the ECU along with the ignition and the keys? Its part number says "coded" so I'm guessing it can only be purchased through a dealer? Ongoing, could it be that the wiring harness is partially fried causing something to malfinction or be totally left out of the equation?
I have an additional ECU from Husky when I raised the stalling issue and I have swapped it in and out twice when the MOSS Tool was working (you need the programming side to do it). But I cant do it anymore as the programming side does not work anymore. My suggestion is to get on-side with a BMW Motorrad dealer, their system should do it, but they have to want to help you.....
Idle fluctuation could also be due to a leaking throttle body vacuum port. For instance, the port used for the charcoal canister may no longer be plugged effectively if a canisterectomy had been performed.
The 650GS problem you refer to is not relevant to the Terra, different ECU, different fault Re the starter relay wiring you tapped into, it depends on which wire you tapped into as to whether it will cause a problem If it was one of the red wires it will not cause a problem, they are simply +12v, if it was the Brown/Yellow wire it will likely generate error codes in the BMS-E but should not cause any further problems, Your fault will be some other problem, possibly even the PCV or leaking throttle body as suggested above
I hope WayneC chimes in here. Not many people have the knowledge/diagnostic ability that he has and he's becoming more familiar with our Husky's.
Before you go looking for an ecu have a read if you have not already: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/problems-after-power-commander.79857/#post-554706 High idle is not uncommon when installing power commander, fingers crossed it might be settings or vacuum hose.
I have not performed cannisterectomy. Problem persists with/without PC installed. Would you by any chance would be interested in selling that spare ecu if I was able to send it out to husky to reprogram it?
Note that a leaking throttle body vacuum port is still possible, even with factory emissions equipment. You could try removing the vacuum hose from the throttle body side of the charcoal canister control valve and plug it. The valve has been known to cause problems for some.
Have you tried removing the PCV and returning your bike to stock? For the idle rpm to vary that much, either the throttle or idle stepper motors have to be adding air. I would try to figure out where the extra air is coming from. Is something making the throttle open a degree or two? Are the idle steppers moving? Can you cap the canister line?
As I have said and advise... If and when the Terra ecu crappers out, I'm switching it over to a more usable setup... microsquirt. Close to $600 for the pc5 setup, and only a bit more for the MicroSquirt. Sure there will be some issues, I am not aware of anybody converting a TR650 at this time, so it is not going to be a plug and play install.
It would be a hard road to swap out the BMSE, it would mean Dash replacement, ABS/Alarm removal where they ae fitted due to the use of CAN BUS
The micro squirt is can bus compliant. It would only take a custom module to make it all work, but alot easier to just think of it as an upgrade vs swap out. Meaning getting a new dash as well. Our dashes are problematic anyway, and hard to read etc. I'm doing a trial on a new ecu... it comes with a different wrapper, and so far is promising. And shaft drive...suck it BMW.
Monster fuel injection will build an ecu for our bikes. He needs all the sensor values and a rotating crank assembly. It would require a new dash assembly for the gauges.
The monster devices on their web site indicate they are yet another snake oil salesman with an add on product All a very hard way to go for the simple task of updating firmware and learning to use diagnostics to reset the ECU when changes to components are made
No they do custom ecu's. They also have a fueler also. But they do custom ecus for bikes, quads and sxs
