• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

ECU Reset Procedure;

  1. Disconnect battery for 30 minutes or more.
  2. Reconnect battery and you should here the dash make a click sound.
  3. Turn ignition key “on” and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Twist throttle from idle to full and back to idle 3 times.
  5. Turn ignition off.
  6. Turn ignition on and start engine (DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING)
  7. Let engine warm up until fan comes on (VERY IMPORTANT)
  8. Check dash, Fuel used, Trip meter will have been erased and Time should need to be reset.
  9. Go ride….did this help….?
Looking forward to hearing how you guys go with this.......

This is the correct procedure and I can confirm it works. The only thing different that I see in your procedure is number 4. I actuated my throttle from idle to full only 2 times.

I did the reset this afternoon and took a short ride. The ERUPTION is in place as well. Acceleration was smooth, Decel was still full of jerkiness and exhaust pop. It almost stalled once on deceleration. That seems to be the typical place for my engine to stall. I still believe I will purchase a PCV w/Auto-tune as soon as I have the cash.

I just did the reset. Wow she starts right up with no cranking. I thought it was just a fluke. I shut her down and started her again. Boy what a difference. Thanks guys.

Nothing new, I already posted this procedure 03. April 2014 ;) (except letting it idle until the fan comes)

But you do not reset the ECU with this procedure, you only reset the TPS and the throttle valve potentiometer/idle speed sensor.

For resetting the ECU you still need the MOSS tool.

But this procedure really works fine

Not letting it idle until the fan comes achieves nothing as I found the hard way, so its a very important part of this procedure. In doing this the ECU sets its "baselines". The other thing it is doing is setting the throttle "sweep" of the TPS including idle:).

You cannot reset the ECU as such with the MOSS Tool. You can load an update (if available), but exactly what is in it, no one knows and you can't go back.

Are you sure the procedure is to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, or is it 30 seconds ? Other bmw forums show the identical TPS reset procedure, but with a 30 second battery disconnect.

I'm not familiar with this stuff so I'll ask a dumb question. If this procedure resets the throttle valve potentiometer/idle speed sensor, would it be possible to turn up the throttle stop adjustment and then go through this reset and not get a tps error?

Try it and let us know:).

Without a bike with a dodgy TPS setting it would be impossible to know either way as there are no obvious signs that the procedure hasbeen invoked. I would be much more likely to believe that a 30 second disconnect would be the go, as service dept in bike shops don't want to be waiting around for half an hour and given that a 15 second off/on cycle is sufficient to reset most electronic equipment and the volatile parts of the dash will reset immediately, I'd say 30 seconds should be plenty.

Well I'm not so sure just giving it a crack tonight, my fuel consumed numbers are not going back to zero after say 10 minutes.
So give me 25 more minutes and see what happens when the 30minutes or so have passed.

Ok, ended being an hour and everything (clock, fuel consumed) zeroed off. So just to let ya's all know that 2, 10 minute trials didn't work out for me.

You have to wait until all capacitors are discharged.

That will not last only 30 seconds ;)

kiwiape, it is possible to delete the mapping completely from the ECU with the MOSS tool and write the mapping new with the MOSS tool. This would cause a reset. Or not? :D

Letting it idle until the fan comes is only a rumor, it is a myth, just for your feeling that it works. It works without waiting that long. By the way... not that good for the engine letting it idle for so long.

You have to play with it to get it to discharge that fast.

So next time I will try adding a step which I didn't try. While battery is disconnected turn the ignition 'ON' then off.

Shit mate, not sure that I could play with it and have it discharge in 30 seconds. :D No fun in that at all!
