Couldn't help but notice that all the new two stroke models use the Mikuni TMX now. Must be an updated version.

Yea maybe......but I am still old and for sure not new....
I am sure that Mikuni has evolved something in the TMX carb.
But word is simply that Keihin is not really in the performance carburetor business anymore or into the carb future for support anyway.

The next thing you know they'll start putting Ohlins suspension on them again.

I'll take the ohlins and the mikuni over the wp and the keihin any day of the week. I've always jetted mikunis easier than the keihin carbs but that's just my take on it

Just like air filter access too. My 79 has side access with no fasteners, 83 seat off access with 2 bolts, 85s and 87s side access with two fasteners, 98 seat off access with one fastener and the 15 is back to side access with no fasteners.

Gotta admit that I find it somewhat amusing that the new Huskies (and KTMs...and maybe others...I haven't researched it)now have the Mikunis. Mainly because most people were quick to decry the TMX on their Italian models and spent a chunk of money for Keihins and Lectrons, and I guess they are happier with them. Maybe I'm just not too fussy, since I am perfectly happy with the TMXs on my WRs. The 125 came jetted very close right out of the crate. The 300 was admittedly not jetted properly at all, and needed the JD Racing kit. A little tweaking and fixing, added a quick adjust idle screw and the carbs were ready to go!

Keihin is getting out of the race carb biz... I've never had a problem jetting Mikunis.....

Me neither. It seems like most are buying the jd for the keihins too and the Suzuki needles. It'd be nice to go back the old plain vm round slide that has proved itself beyond time and time again.

My WR is quite happy with it's Mikuni. I still don't have 400 reasons to buy a Lectron yet.

I bought one a while back at the seller's recommendation that it would cure the hard starting of my 300, but it didn't. Also, even though lots of people touted it as easy to tune, I didn't find it to be so. I took a loss on it and sold it to somebody else who I guess is happy with it...but the Lectron was not for me. I have a little box marked "Mikuni jetting" with some needles, a slide, main jets and pilot jets. Everything I need to make my WRs happy is right in that box. Nice to know that if I bought a new bike, I have a little tuning kit already set up to help me fine tune that.

Just another thing where the keyboard jockies are making everybody believe they "need" it instead of going out and riding your bike and learning how to work on it....

I got the Mikuni working very good on my WR250, in fact any change that I could have made would have made it worse except maybe sending it off to someone who could modify it. The Lectron was an improvement over the "perfect" working Mikuni on my Husky however The Mikuni on my 08 yz125 works so good I would not bother spending $400+ on a Lectron for the Yamaha.

It is always interesting to discuss "old" versus "new" in machinery. When I think of carburation hell, I think of the Amal carbs. I think the modern Mikuni's and Keihins are all capable of being very good in my experience. The issue for me is simply a matter of time and mileage. I would rather spend some initial time getting the Lectron to work right and then never having to touch it for years no matter my riding environment. The one thing I don't have is time, so that right there is worth virtually any investment. The almost doubled fuel economy is a double bonus when I need near 100 mile range out of a 2.25 gallon tank.

I am not questioning those who like the conventional carbs, they work and have worked for a many years. They can be set up to be excellent in any environment. They just aren't capable of being excellent in all environments without some dedication of time and jets. I get maybe 3-4 days off during our 8 month season which is also when we have our 5 month riding season. I want my bike to run perfect whether I am riding at 2000' when it is cold or 12,000' when it is hot at the drop of a hat when I actually get a chance to ride. OBTW, I make nothing off Lectron sales and am not a dealer, just a guy struggling to find time to ride while I still can.

Still have 5 good working Mikuni's running and one Lectron. All work well. The Lectron improves fuel economy for sure.
