Riding home check engine light (cel) came on. It runs rough when on. Limp mode I suppose. Not sure why, rode home 25 miles, no issues. Decided to do a ECU reset to see if it would clear CEL and resume normal operation. During the reset, guess what??? The step where the fan is supposed to kick on never happened. Flashing hazard light on dash, temp gauge almost full bars, no fan on. So does a non op fan cause a CEL? Why yes it does. Checked 10 amp fuse under seat, blown. Replace with new fuse, start bike, CEL turns off, then fan comes on at normal time. All fixed right? No. I turn the handlebars to the right, and fan turns off, and CEL returns. Coincidence??? I think not. I proceed to inspect fan wiring near steering column, and find no issues. The fan wires run into a larger loom that travels along steering stem to the bottom of the headlight housing. The other end goes down under the air filter housing, and it seems a pretty tight fit, and potential for chaffing. I don't find any issues. I then go back to fan wiring, and disconnect the little connector that slides onto the back side of the radiator. Looks ok, but I spray some wd-40 on connectors for shits and giggles. The bike sat in the rain for 3 days so I thought maybe corrosion. I replace the fuse again, let the fan kick on and proceed to turn handlebars back and forth, wiggle wiring and connectors, etc. I cannot get fuse to blow again. Not sure if I fixed it with the wd-40 or not. I will report back after riding it again.
