ive got my first service due at 1000km and want to do it myself as i was qouted $250 for a basic service which included oil and filter change, and a check over of the bike.. seems a bit steep as i have already changed the oil and filter which cost me around $100 for 5 litres of oil and a filter, as far as i can work out there is nothing that critical in this service.. or is there?? also if i do this service myself will it void warranty? would check my manual but i am currently away from home

I wouldn't worry about that, my service was £207 and it wasn't worth half that! i'm saying to hell with the warranty and service it yourself

there are a couple of different threads telling all how to service your Husky TR 650, change the oil and filter, and check the bike over, easy pesy. A few tricks to do the oil without making a mess. Just over 2 us quarts to add. I used the 10-50w castrol recommended. some buy the KN151 oil filter, I bought the OEM oil filter, save your money and DIY.

My first service cost me £80, but that was only because I negotiated it as part of the sale. The mechanics plugged the bike into the MOSS computer to check for error codes from the bike - there were none.

In Australia the bike comes with an unlimited km 2 year warranty. When you bought the bike, a percentage of the purchase price you paid was the cost of that warranty. Be sure that if you're going to do your own servicing, that you're not choosing a false economy. Potentially voiding your warranty in the first 1000km for the sake of saving a hundred dollars or so might not be the best choice.

decisions decions... first service or crash bars. 250 is just a bit too much for an oil change, but ill guess il have to cop it just incase

If it is just an oil change (and no requirements for computer updates etc), then I am pretty sure to satisfy warranty requirements the service just needs to be done by a qualified mechanic. Dealers will tell you it must be a brand qualified workshop but I am pretty sure they are no allowed to stipulate that, legally. You might be able to find it cheaper from another workshop.

My dealer told me I could do the work, just keep receipts for parts.

Same in Australia. Vehicles do not have to be returned to a dealer for servicing. It is an onerous condition that manufacturers try to inflict onto their customers.

One advantage of a dealer service, particularly for a new model like the TR650, is that they may perform work on the bike to resolve problems before they occur. I know that this forum is a good source for discovering and solving issues, but the Husqvarna dealer network might share issues and resolutions which are unknown to this forum, and proactively fix /replace things on your bike before they break. Many vehicle manufacturers will only issue buyers with written recall notices to fix major issues, or potentially dangerous issues, however they might schedule additional recall items for the time the vehicle is presented for service. For instance your bike might have been one which has been identified as having a faulty radiator/thermostat and it might be flagged for a replacement unit on the Husqvarna system without you knowing, and you might instead spend hours of your time trying to burp the system on your own or resolve overheating issues which you might have never experienced otherwise. My wife took her bike to BMW for a scheduled service and it came home with a brand new chain and sprockets, fitted free as part of a non-urgent recall issue due to some potential defect identified by BMW. At that point the bike had 30000km on the clock and would have been due for new chain and sprockets soon. The cost saving of the free chain and sprockets literally paid for that service.

If you say the vehicle was subject to a recall, your wife would have received a letter notifying her of the problem. Not sure if the ACCC differentiate between urgent & non-urgent? Unless BMW had a campaign (durability not safety matters) to repair the issue which does not involve govt agencies.

Campaign, recall, call it what you like. Don't get distracted by my [lack of correct] terminology. That is unimportant to the point I was making.

trooper lu's garage on heathcote road, moorebank. maybe call them to confirm but they told me it would be roughly $250 mark.. can let you know what it was exactly on tuesday. im guessing northside would be pretty expensive as its the closest to the city and there arent many husky dealers around!

    Thanks mate.
I originally tried to buy from them but they could not get any more stock of TR's when I was ready to purchase.
I have 870k's on the clock so looking to book in for 1st service next week.
    Cheers.

I just had Toy Tech in PA handle it last month (although I had all the parts at home) for convenience and the fact they were going to re-MOSS the bike. They also did some things given the fact the bike was never actually set up when I bought it from another dealer including bleeding all brakes and flushing the rear brake system. So the brake bleed and flush, re-MOSS, oil and filter and checks was $196. The bike ran significantly better and I even scored a nice Husky tail pack they had in the showroom. The best thing about the first service is I removed the self imposed 5K rev limit. I have to say I really love this bike and I am so disappointed it is being discontinued. I have never ridden a single that wakes up like this one!

ok so first service came to $244 including a discount of 10% because i purchased the bike from them, all they really did was
loosen the chain (i tightened it a bit too much putting a 15t countershaft sprocket on which makes a big difference! my bike is learner restricted but with the 15t i can pop the front wheel up.)

they did an oil and oil filter change, they used motul 5100 semi synthetic 10w50 oil which i wasnt too sure about but aparently.. its better for the gears as mine have been a bit rough between 1st and 2nd, yet to notice a change.

they also adjusted the clutch taking alot of the play out of it which will take a bit of getting used too.
topped up the radiator coolant (which will hopefully not just overflow as it has been)
and just gave the bike a general check over.

it took them 2.5 hours so be aware if you plan on waiting around.. not much to do in meadowbank

True but these engines have been around for ten years or more, its a bit like buying a used machine, you take your chance. The stealer had done a repair on the expansion bottle instead of replacement saying it was quicker to do that but I insisted on a new bottle which they did eventually send. So I will take my chance and do it myself!

In the case of the Terra, from my understanding, that is true for the engine cases and probably the gearbox components, but most of the rest of the internal engine components are new, untested, and with an extra 10HP, running under stress never exposed to other BMW F650 models with the same engine. Also, even if the engine is tried and trusted for a decade, this does not stop you from buying the one in a thousand which was built with a manufacturing defect. That is what the factory warranty is. It's a bet the manufacturer is making with you, that they have not sold you a dud. They are gambling that the number of defective bikes they sell will be low enough to have the total cost of warranty expense absorbed by adding a small premium to the cost of the new bike for every buyer. To use an analogy, by intentionally not complying with the basic warranty requirements is like putting a £10 bet on a long shot racehorse at 100 to 1 and then tearing up your betting ticket and walking away. The chances are, you will not suffer from the consequences of your action, because the horse will probably finish last.... but even the Grand National has been won 5 times by horses at the longest offered odds in the field. 100:1 :)
