Fitting 390 Auto Axial Bearing For End Of Mainshaft In Primary Cover 1978 Model, Help Required.

I've just picked up a 1 owner 1978 390 auto and the primary cover is off, can anyone advise how to fit the axial bearing to the primary cover? Do I have to remove the needle roller first as the existing thrust bearing doesn't seem to be there any more!

I don't have a good picture of your difficulty. I have a 420 auto vintage 1981 but it is a bit different from your model. Do you have a workshop manual? If not I can email you the 76-80 360-390 auto manual.
