Yowza! I like the guy who stopped at the very top and watched as everyone else rode into the abyss. That thing is brutal.
I guess I am just a big ol sissy cause there is nothing about that race that makes me want to even try it. But I love to watch and be amazed by some of the skill.
Id give it a shot on Beta 300cc 2T. Dont even know if Id qualify for the show. But I do know that with a a big fat balloon 140/80-18 FIM tread Goldentyre Gummy with mousses installed those big loose hills would not be an issue. The rest of the insanity.....thats another story no matter what you run.
Before that he drowned out his bike in the deep water before the first hill. http://www.enduro21.com/index.php/component/k2/item/1104-onboard-dougie-lampkin-erzbergs-start
2 years ago a local WNYOA Hare Scramble rider did Erzberg. I was surprised when he posted on FB he was going, a he's a pretty average, mid-pack B Senior guy and never even rode enduros or tougher events, that I knew of. He rented a KTM and was treated like a Factory Rider under the orange awning. He qualified, but I'm not sure how far he got, but had a great time. Flip side was... Mike Sigety. ECEA rider, multi-time AMA National Enduro Champ in the A Class. Mike loves tough stuff and decided to do Erzberg the same year. Simplest way to do it is rent a KTM, like the other guy, as you get Orange Carpet treatment for the whole event. Even though he's a Suzuki rider, Mike rents a KTM 300, the weapon of choice for this race, but when he arrives.... he finds a KTM 200 with his name on it! KTM is sure he reserved a 200 and Mike is sure he said 300! He says no thanks, as he doesn't think a 200 will drag him up those hills and KTM shows him the door. He finds a ratty KTM 300 locally and buys it, but it needs work. Goes to the KTM truck and gets the cold shoulder, but gets befriended by some local racers and they scrounge up the parts he needs, a place to work and pit support. I'm pretty sure he qualified, but not sure how far he got in the race also. Two cool experience of a lifetime, that many riders will never have. It just takes desire, time and money....
I love all of this tough stuff. Those are the types of events I want to do. You need a ton of skill but its not about outright speed, more on who really wants to finish. They look like so much fun. It's cool that you know 2 people that had the opportunity to go. Awesome video too
