Just curious if you upgraded the grips along with the bars, or used the factory grips The plus for the stock grips, is they are still new, the ends are already eliminated for handguards, and no additional cost. The only down side is having to drill/tap the new bars, which isn't that big of a deal. The plus for aftermarket grips, more comfortable
I re-used the stock grips. But rather than drill/tap for the non-throttle side, I simply put in slightly oversized set screws in the stock grip carrier. I had to cut back the grip a little in the area of the screws, but to date that grip has not budged. Further redneck/ace hardware engineering I made inserts for the stock bar end weights out of well nuts with the flange trimmed off, some lock nuts/washers and really long bolts.
I kept my original grips when I installed my Protaper Contours. Had to hammer on the LHD grip with some lube to put into position. I used the expanding plug set up that came with the Barkbuster mount kit. I'm satisfied it provides good retention.
I also kept my original grips when installing a set of Renthal high rise fatbars. Just had to make some 18mm OD 12mm ID sleeves for the new riser clamp (ended up making it from 20mm round teflon). Also I drilled a new hole in the bars for the screw (easy done). As for end weights, put a set Barkbusters on with their end weights and all seems ok!
Ya, that left grip will take some tapping to get it on. I went to hardware store yesterday to get some longer bolts for the expanding plugs that came with the Cycras, and to get a tap in case I decided to tap the bar for the stock grips, and ended up losing the little screw for the stock gripper. hahaha, got one more. Im doing the Simtek heaters. I think I may just go with some Pro Taper or Renthal grips while im at it
