PVdudke here on this site did a good writeup on this stuff. He makes a good point about picking an oil and ratio that you feel is reasonable and jetting around it.

I run 42-1 Amsoil in my all my bikes including my vintage 86 WR400.

Jetting is the KEY no matter what ratio you use. I still use 25:1 in my 250's , 20:1 in the 77 RM125. 32:1 works just fine, just remember to Jet for Success
Their is lot's of good reading out there on the subject so you might want to start here.

I am running 24:1 Echo two stroke oil in my 86 400 XCE. No big smoke issues. This is the recomended mix.

What jetting are you currently running in your bike? I assume you have a 38 mm round slide Mikuni fitted?

Thanks, that is interesting. I will be running a 38 mm flat slide Mikuni originally from an '84 Husky CR250 on my 390. I have not had it running yet (still a few weeks away).

I have got 460 main and 45 pilot jets in the carb. The 460 was in the carb when I got it, and I have gone up from the original 40 to a 45. I beleive Pro Circuit made recommendations for the jetting on the 390 back in the day and they suggested a 480 main and 50 pilot, so I figured my starting points are pretty close. I will update you when I (hopefully) get it running.

I used to have an '84 CR250 and remember that I ran a 400 main in it. It ran sweet as a nut, so this 460 jet seems pretty big to me for a 250. Anyone got any suggestions about this?

    yep

i think those pro circuit settings are for a brand new bike in probally a lot hotter climate than ours,im pretty close as i say starts real easy and ticks over no bogging but only give few short fast runs- yet to realy open her out under load so not a million miles away.so you wont go far wrong with what im at just matter trial and error really,my pilot circuit should be pretty good as i have no starting issues wich is a bonus.
