I am seeking some advice on which gas cans are most reliable/safe for transport in my Sprinter. I normally do not keep a gas can in the van and while my 310 has a tank vent that vents a little, it has not been problematic as long as I don't fill to the brim, close the windows fully, etc... I do run with A/C driving in the heat and any fumes seem to be drawn out and less apparent than front windows open and air then venting to the front. I used to carry and old style cheapo gas can in my Scirocco when I trailered my bike to road races when young and foolish but would like to be a little more careful today. In any case I realize CA has carb style requirements for no venting but many of the cans just get bad reports of leaking crappy spouts. One, the No Spill seems better than others but my local dealer still sells a lot of the VP cans and hoses. Appreciate any advice on what works best. I am looking to carry 2 gallons of fuel so I can refill once for 2 days of riding, then air out the tank before for heading home. Thanks for any advice.
I carry a 5 gallon no spill can like the one pictured in my VW Vanagon when I go ridding. If the can is left in direct sunlight it will puff up but I've not had any leakage. Normally I'm just driving 30 min or less then store outside while I ride. If you think you'll have it indoors for a wile I'd just make sure you leave some expansion room and not fill the can to the brim. I know in NJ it's not legal to travel with it inside the van and with a sprinter you can find something to hold it on the outside of the rig. Joe
Old style metal jerry can 20l jobbie tied to the side pannel so it cant fall over never had any leaks as the cap cams shut then lock clips it down is a stiff mechanism and solid unit.
Thanks guys... The old style metal cans hard to beat. Going to strap down whatever I get (sprinter has tie downs all over) and only fill say 2 gallons if a 2.5 gal container.
Wow.... so no venting of gas cans in Cali. So what's worse, vapor into the atmosphere or a ticking time bomb in the back of your vehicle. G/L on whatever you decide, FWIW, I use this type of can & I bungee cord it to the siderail of my trailer.
Everyone hates the carb cans because the spouts are prone to cracks in no time. I would be more apt to get a VP w/long hose, fill 2/3rds and at any opportunity stop, remove it and vent it.
They decided to make fuel cans in California so a child cannot get burnt, but in the process, they have become the most dangerous way an adult can poor fuel. Don't worry about the person that actually has to use the can. My dad gave me a California can a few years ago, and I hate that damn thing. It's good for two stroke mix for the blower since the spout either gives you a trickle of fuel, or if you open it anymore, it gets everywhere except where you want it. NATO Gerry cans are the only way I go. I finally got around to cleaning my garage since the earthquake, and found my trailer was being held up by one of my NATO cans since the tongue fell. One of the three handles got dented, but the can is perfect. Also had 4 or so gallons in it. That has sold me even more on them. They ain't legal here, but what is anymore!
Thats the bad boy yours is in good nic mines beat to shit n still sealed up strong good cans, not leagal how come? Im not clued up on state laws but i thought from safety all the can has to do is be fully sealed.
This is the CARB version. Not sure besides the spout if it's different. I think the idea is that the spots don't vent to the air. Red required too I think for CA. Too tall for me in any case.

I use the 5 gallon version that doesn't come with attached funnel. Tractor Supply sells it. I keep a small wide spout funnel in a gallon zip loc bag.
The spout I have is just corrugated steel one with out the special vent. The cans themselves are vented internally at the mouth, so when you pour the gas, it comes out easily. The red one is what you can buy now. If you notice, the red cans spout has that little tip on the end, that's the vent
Why not drill the cap, put in a brass nipple, connect a length of tubing to it, and run it to the outside of the vehicle?
You know the funnel pops off the eagle. I like the flat sided nato can better. I secure the VP jugs to the wall of the hauler and it looks like the flat can will take up less space. I only carry a half full gas jug anyways as 2 gal is good for the two thirty min moto format we run. The steel can is for VP c12 as that fuel gets outside the plastic gas jug, makes a wet looking can and all the stickers fall off and the whole hauler smells. Thought about mounting a hitch and haul on the back just to keep gas on. But the nato can could be mounted next to the LP cylinder up front, going to look into this more.
Now hope it arrives to be used next weekend! Perfect fit at the rear quarter against the side panel and over the two tie downs. Nice low profile + spout and extra gasket. Only issue I can see is they won't sell it to certain states so we'll see if it ships. One seller on Amazon stated the majority of their orders were from CA Law Enforcement. ** Good news... It has shipped!
