From what little I've learned is; Get the camera that offers the best bang for the buck. My GoPro Hero 960 isn't full HD, but pretty darn good. It does NOT have a back display so pointing the camera is based on luck and experience. The most important part is your computer. Do you have software to work with the RAW image? I've used Apple iMovie and it takes about 2 hours to process the data (45min) so I can work with it. The other thing I've heard regarding 1080p data is computer processing power. That's what stumps me. I probably have about 2 hrs of image data from previous years ice racing that I haven't sat down and gone thru. I made a 7 minute movie about 3 years ago that took me 4 hours to splice together. I'm not very good at it it seems haha.

GoPro2 with Wifi backpack if they have any left at COSTCO. Same as resolution as 3White but way less.

I went with an Ego by Liquid Image - still evaluating it, but it seems to work fine. It was a less expensive camera.

I have had a Contour for a couple of years and it has been super tough and reliable..The Low profile helmet mount works great in the bush on the tight stuff.
I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

I've got 2 Contours, a 1080HD & the Roam. Both are great HCs & it doesn't stick out in the wind like a GoPro. I'm really good at taking video, just not to good at uploading the stuff. Depending on your internet speed, it can take 8hrs to upload a 15 min clip, that's crazy. Or I could be doing it wrong:D

Have a serious look at the Replay XD1080. I've had one for about 12 months. The picture is so much better than GoPro or Contour. No fish bowl! The issue I have is the small in built battery, about 2 hours HD recording. You can get an external battery that will add either 2 or 4 hours to record times, depending on the size you choose.

I have owned both 1st gen GoPro, 3rd gen Go Pro and contour plus. Contours are lower profile if you do the helmet mount, everywhere else they are not as easy to mount as the GoPro. The GoPro Hero 3 (white, silver or Black) is the #1 camera for a reason. Best resale value, most options and easy to use. The silver is the best bang for the buck in my book.

Had a look at the gopro on the weekend. Three models white silver and black. White is $280 black is $460. I believe the differences are frames per second captured and other features. I understand you can get smart phone app which acts as a remote, and you can see images of what is being captured on screen for setup purposes.

You got it all wrong... Number one seller has nothing to do with quality of product.

I've been using the previous versions for a while, they're way smaller so trees don't knock them off. With a little ingenuity you could mount them under your visor, then it'll never come off.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking into alternatives to Gopro. There seems to be quite a few bugs with the new 3's they came out with. Not saying their all bad but apparently Gopro lacks in customer service too. Anyway, thanks for the link

At the moment I am not 100% happy with it. There always seems to be some reason for it not to work.

Dead battery, reaching the upperlimit of file size when it stops working, it will not operate and charge at the same time, and most recently - a movie file was corrupted.

It probably does not help that many of the features/settings cannot be set via the device itself, it requires a smartphone with their custom app to be downloaded from their site, and I don't have a smartphone.

I will be sure to do a full evaluation at some point...

The GoPro silver is $299 and the black is $399

The black comes with the remote and shoots 1440 dpi

GoPro also offers the app for free, it works with both silver and black camera, the app allows you to preview your shot, the only way to watch live video or play back without a computer is to buy the LCD bac panel.

I will only use GoPro now!

Dots per inch, it related to clarity and i think the frame rate is better so the black will give better quality for motion and shaking.

I have the EGO and love it. Ive owned the GoPro and GoPro HD and i prefer the EGO. You can make the EGO mounts fit a GoPro mount by the way. Ive done it with the GoPro Chesty and it works great. The video is good and the sound is WAY better. You can modify the GoPro cases by drilling them out so your videos dont sound like they were recorded in a soup can.
Two main values of the EGO for me:
    Cheaper than the GoPro
Wifi enabled so I can start recording by remote, via my iphone. No more videos that start with my big head in the camera saying "is it recording?"
