past couple weeks i've been doin' a lil "closet-training" on my CX bike. got an invite from some team-mates to go explore some ST i aint done with them yet. really odd to cuz it's smack next to some roads i sumo'd every weekend on my SMR 510. how i missed this i dunnow. most of it's on the Backbone. had a nice diverse group from beginner to expert. first part was pretty sedate 2% climb in the big ring...quail GALORE. never seen quail in the SMM's. got to the first road cut and my team manager was gonna double back with the begniners. my two expert bud's said "we're taking kev with us, gonna try and kill him". joy. i'm nowhere near on any kid of form but...i'm in! glad i went. man was it epic. first real ride back since last year. last climb i got some form back and started to bridge the gap and got to put the hammer down some. over 20 miles and about 3000' + of climbing, most of it ST! and, i snaked them on the entrance to the ST decent, mreeep! had to be 500 turns back to the truck w/ only two massive moments, one a near miss with a tree and my new shoulder- it's would have been BAD, we stopped for an OH SH** moment just lookin' @ each other...then busted up laughing and went back to hammering mreeep mreeep! (yes i make that noise pedaling) weather was a fluke, only around 85*, one climb was kinda toasty but it could have been triple digits easily, as it was the day before. mucho thanks to my boys for stokin' me up. got some new trails in my logbook and i can loop these sections in on others and make some killer 5 hour epics. so if any of ya's so cal's like pedaling lemme know. we do lot's of this....(pics: me on cardiac hill last year, one of several steeep switch's in a row. real gagger in 100* heat...and a still of Trigger, one of my pedalers...)
Sounds like a great ride. It is pretty fun to hop on a MB for a little change of pace. Like you said, you find trails that you otherwise blow right by on a husky. Good stuff. I've been trying to get back into pedaling shape lately myself. What's with the training wheel on your bike?
Nope just concentrate on my old guy "burn no energy" ride style. Save my small amount of energy to really hit the nasty stuff (clear it or die) and cruz the rest If i get in trouble or have to push I'm done. I did have a pimped out Santacruz bullet down hill bike I tried to kill myself on several times. After realizing i get hurt a lot more on MT/DH bikes i quite riding them, just like pit bikes.
Nice bike, I've been wanting one of those... had one as a kid. As much as mountain bikes cost I keep thinking there should be more to them, then it hits me... the engine is missing.
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...=1&ndsp=8&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0&biw=1024&bih=565 not mine but same one I have, and I am with Kelly on this, MTBs hurt me way more than motorcycles.
In the past I loved MTBing, but for some reason I stopped I don't know why, but now I'm 25 kgs heavier and now I just could not be bothered Kel
eggzachary one of the reasons why i pedal....i can ride stuff i cant on my moto's. oooo how i wish i could smoke some of it on the moto's. dood- there's this guy by me? rides an off-road uni. has a giant DH tire it i think, see him flailing like a mad man on the steep and technical. i just sit there with my jaw open, feeling pretty unworthy. i mean that's the sickest thing i've ever seen on pedals.
I think the reason I don't get hurt much on the MB is I'm always pedaling uphill....when I get to the top it's paved all the way down... I ride some, but not as much as I should. Kudos to those that choose to pedal!!! Anybody got one of those 29ers? I hear they are fun on the downhills.
my bud just got a stumpjuper 9'r. man that's a neat bike. he's 5'11 though. i'm inbetween sizes. used to be a solid medium in 80mm on a 26" wheel. now im a small due to the 100mm fork most hardtail XC bikes have...and that sucks cuz they climb and turn like crap now-the BB is way too high. i'm still screwing with this Giant's set up- installing a 1x1 rigid fork this week, i really prefer rigid over suspension for XC, it climbs better, turns better, and if ya ride it right yer not losing any time over the long haul...it's a cool piece and all but it cant hold a candle to my Curtlo XC race bike. the new 9r's have great geometry and 90mm forks. i didnt like them at first. now i do. im looking hard at the medium Stumpy. i'm all done with the factory 26" wheeled hardtail XC thingy as they are being morphed by the factories into freeride'ish-esque 4x stuff instead of XC race bikes, like they are supposed to be. the factories want WAY too much for these HT's and they are simply crap. i'll build a custom bike for that much before i give it away to the chi-com's. this lil orange bike pic'd rides better than anything ive thrown a leg over. maybe because i had the frame custom built, but, it's steel, good steel, it's been ridden, flogged, trained on and raced in many configurations- rigid and suspened, single multi-speed, i built it up at home, a few times, and as long as the brazings hold and i can get parts for it it has top billing in my stable ("flika"):
ya so i got my son a redline for his bday lastmonth....hey let me show ya how to go faster(standing and peddeling) didnt work out so well lol foot slipped off and about ate it hard hahaha he was all worried and stuff. runs up there dad you ok??? ya son here ya go be careful on that thing. so got to say after 20+ years i think i forgot how to ride a damn bike lol anyway heres the lil guys ride. that things about a 1/4 of the weight of my huffys i had growin up.
cool Redline, he looks stoked! (where's the helmet! sorry, one of those things for me...) i'm kinda drooling on this... might have to join the 9'r club....but 2k$ for a 27# bike dont go down very easily! esp when me steel Curtlo is 21# race ready.
thanks, he was pumped. i still need to get him one for the bicycle. funny the guy didnt say anything about it when i bought the bike and i wasnt even thinking about it either. probably go back in there this weekend.
aaak! do it, please. no lid no ride! (i freak out over that...sorry) take a few mins to make it fit too...fer kids and low speed stuff prefer the "skater" types....they are a bit warmer but are bomb proof. styrofoam is lighter but is delicate.
lol well get one. really the main piece of equipment i always wished i had on was a cup from what i remember that center frame bar was harsh hahahaha
thats one thing i noticed all the bmx bikes back in the day had pads that came with them, they dont have anything on em nowdays i have a some foam waterpipe insulated tubing i slapped on his for the time being. well see how much they want for the wraps if they have any at the bike shop
