So I have a 2008 husqvarna TE 610 and I was out riding it today and I dropped it and it cause a small one inch hairline fracture on the left engine case cover. It's now leaking oil. Not alot though. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.
I think you'll end up getting the standard suggestions: 1.) Right fix/greatest peace of mind fix: buy another cover...new or a used one in good condition off of ebay, a part-out, etc. 2.) Remove it and have it welded, of course making sure you get someone good w/ that material. 3.) JB Weld it. If the surface is very clean this will hold up quite well. Best to remove first and get the thing absolutely clean, but can be done on the bike with good results. It also doesn't have to look trashy...can be pressed into crack and gooped on in general, and then sand smooth.
I have no doubt it can be welded. I had part of my cases welded, and one that was cracked on a previous bike, with good results. Dont bother with JB weld, i really dont think much of it in situations like this. Ive tried it and the results have been 50/50. Doesnt seem to hold up well to prolonged heat and oil exposure.
Yes- to be clear- if it were my bike I'd have to replace the cover...or have it welded. That said I've seen many instances on various bike forums (primarily adv) wherein the JB held up for the long haul (but again proper prep was the key.) So yeah, OP, do go for the best fixes first.
I wasnt having a dig at you fella. I agree with you. The times ive used JB weld and it has failed, are when it was exposed to hot oil. When i got my case welded, the weld turned out to be porous, so oil seeped through. I thought, no problem, ill just seal it with JB weld. 2 attempts and both went soft and peeled off, the area was cleaned with acetone first. I ended up putting a layer of tiger seal over it and it worked very well. Things stay stuck/sealed with tiger seal.
You have to strip the paint from the repair area as JB will not bond to paint. But yes to cleaned bare metal roughed with medium to semi coarse paper so it has something to bite into. The key to a lasting JB repair is if you grind or sand the gloss off, you need to coat it with 5 minute epoxy to seal it otherwise it will swell up and peel off.
Thanks man but nah, I didn't think that...and it didn't hurt to elaborate anyway. Fingers crossed here - in all my years of riding I've somehow managed to avoid a side cover crack (though I did have the main case crack, but where it was prohibited welding so a whole new case set was required. That sure stung!)
It depends on where the cover is cracked. I had bad experiences with epoxy resin, two cracks on the stator cpver ; they simply didn't hold, even after clearing and scraping the areas, and it was done on the inside. On the other hand, I repaired a small fracture on the RH side with it and it worked, but the crack wasn't as severe as the other two. I'd buy a used cover just for peace of mind - you can always repair the other one and have one spare.
Thanks for all the responds guys! So I think I'm gonna try the JB weld and see if that works and I'll be searching for a new side cover too if anyone has one for sale or send me a link to where I could get one I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again!
