  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Handguards- what are you using?

I would appreciate any opinions on handguards for an 08 TE510.
Need to order a set ASAP for a tight woods ride next weekend.

Thanks!

For woods riding I went with the Acerbics.

But on my 510 (which is plated) but rode in the bush I have the Zetas.
They have the led signals inside them.

I have beat the snot out of a few pair of Enduro Eng ones and see no reason to change brands.

I have ran every handguard out there. I have bent ot broken every handguard or mount there is. I still have all of my worn/broken handguards in a box in the garage. BIG BOX So far the highway dirtbike hand guards are a really well thought out handguard. They are super tough. I have slammed a few granite boulders and dropped the bike a few times, no big crashes yet and I have no worries when the the time comes. There are more mounting points on the HDB setup so one needs to keep tabs on the allen bolts after many tip overs happen. Every handguard will loosen up sooner or later, just sooner when I play.

i use bark busters... same as acerbis and have dropped it more times than i can count ! sometimes bend but thats easy to put back.. saved my fingers a lot as they are tough.. not cheap though at around 80-100 bucks here in OZ...

Cycra

I did the same research three years ago when getting my 510 ready. After reading all the opinions, I went with Cycra. I've been very happy. Great protection and easy install.

Cycra Pro Bends with the Center Reach Mounts are the coolest I've seen. They fit the stock bars great and they are MADE IN AMERICA!!! :usa:

Hey Ruffus; that's a good picture

Certainly you have some great options out there. I do like my Cycra Pro Bends. The "bend" makes it easy to slide your hand in & out from the grips and if things get a bit harry out there then you might not bang your hands quite as easy on the bar as it exits the handlebar.

My 2 cents.

I'm gonna vote again for the HDB's

For not much more than the other brands, you can get

Bar risers
Mirrors (really good mirrors)
and a lot of functionality like switch mounts and even a ipod remote.

And they are damned good handguards too.

Cycra pro-bend for the 1 1/8 bars. They are very solid and mount next to the bar mount or you can buy the optional mount that replaces the top clamp on the bar mount. I have tested them for a year with no issues of bending and having to straiten them out. Good product IMO. All the brands mentioned are great, now you need to decide what you like best. I picked mine up from cyclebuy.com 112.95 plus 8 shipping.

I have been through all the hand guard options and I LOVE the HDB ones. have them on several bikes, they are awesome. Mounting system is top notch, fit great, excellent protection, out of the way of all cables and bar mounted stuff. Top of the heap IMHO.
