    Hello gang,

Trying to help out friend of mine who just got 02 Gasgas ec250 and has a hard time starting it.

Bike will start after some serious kicking. Will always start. But Hot or cold it will take some serious kicking. Choke does not make it easier to start when hot.

It will idle fine, but that can just cut of. Very abruptly. Raising idle does not help. But i did not raise idle to screaming levels. It will idle fine and then just cut off.

Once moving, it's a beast. Hard to keep front wheel down. Seems to have almost same amour of power as my WR 300.

    Headlight is always off.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks a lot!

    usual suspects,
    spark plug
spark plug cap resistor breaking down?
ht wire corroded (if its copper)
crankshaft seals if the magneto side is drawing in air that can be a bugger to start.

any loose or corroded wiring, if you swap plug and it starts easy for a few days then returns its your plug cap if its got a resistor, oh and a resistor plug and plug cap is bad news. use unsupressed on either one

Thanks, will check it out plug and wiring.

So it does not sound like fueling problem?

Is crankshaft seals hard to replace? Meaning full engine disassembly?

    Thanks!

This sounds really basic but is the mix okay? Also fuel tap, strip it and clean, I've just brought a 06 cr125 had the exact same symptoms! Also what's the exhaust fumes like? Is it really white? Black?

on a husky its clutch cover and magneto off, on gas gas i have no clue.
i assumed as you said it was allways hard to start and goes very well when its running that the fuel is fine, sounds like spark issue to me
but i have been wrong before

    Update.

Changed plug, cleaned out all electrical contacts. No improvement.

Cleaned out carb, pilot was really dirty and there was lot of crap in a bowl.

Much much better now. 1-2 kicks when hot. And seems to idle much better now.

Will see how it runs for few weeks before digging any deeper.

    Thanks for the help!!

Damn that bike is so much easier to kick than my 300...

It also easier to find TDC on his.

Is there longer kicker available for wr300? I am 5-7 160 lbs and I can't kick it when my foot is on the ground. Can't generate enough power. Standing on foot pegs( no bashing) I start it with few kicks easy.

I think you do have that power ... You gotta dig sometimes for that dog-gone power :)

Crank seals can def cause some starting woes. Another oddball is that the silencer packing could be spooge soaked - pull the silencer back from the pipe and see if it lights easy. We had that happen to a KTM this past summer on a Colorado trip. A quick trip to Ace hardware for some insulation and she would light with a half-arsed kick!

How often should you change the insulation? Mines and fmf

Well, that depends on use - and how spoogie his bike is. If that bike is 12 years old and has not had the packing change - you may know where your problem is. If you slide the silencer baffle out and there is what appears to be a HEAVY gooey oily mess, you may be done. Get some actual packing fiberglass, repack and try it out. In a crunch, you can use plain old pink fiberglass, but it lasts about 1/4 of the time of dedicated moto-glass.

One of the reasons I converted my 300 to a 250. I had a hard time starting the 300, myself.

It's very easy, like doing a top end job, and it didn't cost me anything. I found a guy with a 250 that wanted a 300 and we traded top ends. I was already running a Keihin and didn't really have to change the jetting much. I think I went up one or two sizes on the main and one on the pilot.

Thanks! I will look in to that... I will try riding with 300 first to see if i can deal with it.. my bike has recluse, so it should help I think.

about my friends bike, his exhaust is completely covered in goo inside... I had him order packing kit, but it looks really bad.

on 2 strokes, if you are not running hot and reving the bike hard, is it normal for spooge to drip out of back?

I am running Amsoil interceptor oil.
