Hasn't anyone built their own single exhaust?

Surely someone has... I can only find one old thread. There is a DG can available over on the eBay that is USFS approved. I could cut the pipe at the Y and make it look like it was never there. Whadda ya think?

I did. Bike is apart for round two, carbon fiber with stainless piping.

Yeah- you're the one and only I saw! I could have sworn there were more guys giving it a go. You bent up a whole new mid pipe didn't you? Why did you decide to ditch the stock piping? Trying to map out how I proceed. There's a DG can I found on Dennis Kirk that has a spark arrestor end cap and a quiet insert that I'll probably use. A buddy put one on his DR650 and I like it. It's like $160 and weighs maybe 4,5lb. Losing 10lbs wouldn't do any harm-

A couple guys cut and welded off the right side pipe. I went with a new pipe and shelved the stock one. I took a set of old headers and cut and welded them to shape. They are a bit larger id than stock for better flow, since I was losing the "y". I weighed the cans, and they are quite heavy, and my Scorpion carbon fiber is about 4 lbs. I still have to fab up some nice mounting brackets.

The Scorpion doesn't come with a baffle or spark arrestor, so that has to be fabbed as well. I'm mostly doing it for weight, secondly for sound and as a bonus, more power.

I'll tune the Lexx (dobec style) fuel control on the dyno.

If I'm correct the catalyst is in the LH can?? Losing the weight would be great as I carry too much gear on a regular basis. I'm gonna try using the stock pipe with the DG spark arrestor can- it has to be freer-flowing than the stock pair of choked up restricted cans. I scored a dobec fueler on eBay for $180 and will add that then schedule some Dyno time. I'm still messing around with my 02 sensor as well and need to report back on what I'm seeing there. The tool tube is looking good to me as well- I waste lots of valuable space on tools.

Took the baffles/spark-arrestors and cats out 4K miles ago. She sounds way better.

I left the cats in place but pulled the baffles (actually- it was funny, my dealer removed them before I picked the bike up... Left the end caps off and when I got home there was a foot of packing hanging out!). So I removed the rest and it's been like that for 5k miles. Sounds like a proper thumper now.

How? Did you guys cut the end caps off then weld back on? I am thinking of doing this but reckon you would also need to cut the tube in half & get it off to access the guts. I'm thinking of straight through perforated pipe then packed with stainless steel wool & ceramic fibre packing around it then weld back up.

I removed the silencers and chiseled out the cats. Here is a post where this is discussed:

I'm a little green on exhaust systems but I know that I could easily mis-match a single can and reduce the bike's performance.
But, since something like a full single GPR system is spendy, what about something tailored to our engine?

Our engines are the same as BMW G650X series, only (supposedly) putting out a few more HP. How close to the mark do you think something like this would be for our bikes? http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/scorpion-factory-oval-slip-on-exhaust-bmw-g650x-2007-2009

The plan would be, assuming it all works, to cut and cap the right side of the pipes and using this single slip-on.

Here is a post I prepared earlier...
I now have an original left hand muffler with the end restrictor ( outlet) removed and a larger diameter outlet replacing it. I just drilled holes through the internal baffler with a long bit. Still way lighter than the original system though. The Australian left muffler doesent have a Cat inside (?) but the right one does. I now have a a power commander fitted and ALL my starting woes are gone, but the new ( restrictive compared to the Tyga can) muffler is quieter than the Tyga and chokes the motor a little but looks stock ( sort of). The bit of titanium beside the outlet is to protect the panniers. I live past the edge of town and the estate has very poor power stability so my thin metal welding is a problem. Any decent welder could do a better job.
    Here is the current setup.

Can you post a link to the DG can on Dennis Kirk? That's a pretty good price.

When I was looking around for options I was considering doing my own custom setup. I was looking for a single FMF Q4 as I like that silencer but the price was up there. I decided I wanted to keep the twin pipe setup so it stayed slim and would work with the SW-Motech racks I have for the bike. One of the single cans might work with them also, not sure.

The one major downside to the Screaming Demon twin pipes I have is weight, they are built like a tank and weigh the same, maybe 1 lb weight savings over the stock pipes. Otherwise I love 'em. I agree, loosing 5-6 lbs (realistic) up high on the bike would be a good thing. I think the stock cans weight about 14 lbs total, ~7 lbs each. The SD ones I have are about 6.5 lbs each so ~ 13 lbs up high. If you find something around the 4-5 lb range for a single can you'd be looking to save about 9 lbs. Loosing some connector tubing will help also. But I think the air flow needs to be up there so you don't end up choking the motor.
