Hello there, Just joined up to learn about the Terra, considering purchasing one near me here in Ft collins. Price is similar to same Year KLR, and seems like a much better bike, and I like that it has EFI to deal with lall the elevation changes here. So my big question to you guys is would you buy another?? Do you think its a good bike for the long haul. I have read a bit about the stumbling issues etc, anything I can do on test ride to best test if for isssues? My Background is I've had many bikes and currently own a HD Superglide 2008 also, set up for long distance riding so the Terra would be a local toy and adv type ride to explore Colorado. I've had all types of bikes, dirtbikes, Sport bikes, a Couple HD, and most recently a Triumph Tiger before my Current Harley Thanks for any advice!
IMHO money well spent, I've owned this motorcycle since may of 2013, I have done nothing except change oil and filter, air filter and added farkles - hand guards, racks, top rear carrier, brake protector. What a machine, from single track to open highway it goes. One of the most fun bikes I've ever owned, I'm having a blast on it. I'm experiencing some head shake now but think I can fix that by reinstalling my bar weights. I'd buy it again, grab it while you can, a lot of torque for your money. Have fun on it, ride safe.
YES. Try to ride it and ensure it doesn't have the lean stumble gremlin; other issues can be dealt with if you've any mechanical aptitude at all, thanks to this site and ADVR.
I am the proud owner of a brand new TR650 for 2 months now and I have ridden 1500km (932 miles) on it till now. I got the TR from a fully equipped KTM/Husqvarna dealer that is relatively near my house so if I encounter any problems I can just call them and they will most likely have a solution for me. CH and ADVR have also really informed me on the issues of the bike and just like Scott Jones said, there is enough information available here to solve any issues. Personally I have not experienced the lean stumble, engine rough idle or other common problems posted here and on ADVR, I guess it really depends on where you live (elevation) and it also differs between individual TRs. It is a incredible bike though in my opinion, I enjoyed every minute riding it and for the price you really cant go wrong.
Thanks for the responses, I posted over on ADV rider too, I've been a member there for a few years, just don't post much. I hope to go ride it tomorrow, I will update when I do!
I don't have the terra, but the Strada and for the type of riding l do, l couldn't do better, great commuter, have done some big trips covering both road and trail and one thing that no one has mentioned yet, absobloodylutly fabulous fuel economy lol. oh, and it a blast riding on the mountain range roads near me lol
I agree, and even with stellar fuel mileage, it is a beast with power. It always amazes me in town at the lights. I just baby it off the line and end up miles ahead of the closest cage. On my 250 I go through 5 gears and still can't catch the bumper of the slowpokes ahead. If you have any doubts as to the claims others are getting on the beemers or other bikes about mileage, you can do a real world comparison of fuel economy at http://fuelly.com/motorcycle My best so far is 69 mpg and worst about 52 mpg. Compared to my bmw with 38 being the best, LOL, not a stretch to wonder why I love this bike, I also hate it at times though too.
Mileage: I third that. Averaging 52 mpg this summer, no interstate, mostly commuting on secondary roads and some woods riding. And that's with 15T front/49T sprockets and on Pirelli MT-21 tires at 20 psi.
I too encourage you to buy one. Mines just over two years old now, with 15,000km. I have two other bikes, so this is used for short errands in the city and good country runs at 120kph and then miles of trails, camping out with mates. Done a few 2000+km camping trips and the Terra is perfect! I installed a Booster Plug at about 1000km and had no stumbling since! The rest has been farkles, oil and filter. Will do valves at 20,000. Happy riding
Do it....it kept me focussed on solving problems thru effort....a zen thing to avoid slipping into other crap. Otherwise it will do what you want in a dual purpose bike. Loaded up to the gills and still enjoyable.
Another happy owner. I've had mine since new (3 years this Spring). Love it and would probably buy another if it was stolen or wrecked.
This is really great to hear as I'm about to get one these as well and in same boat in terms of cross- shopping bikes. Do these need to be serviced by a husky dealer, by the way? Thanks, Great forum!
I live 400 miles one way, away from my dealer/service, do all my own maintenance, tail light fix, oil change and filter change, chain tension, valve clearance adjustment. To clear codes you will need a dealer with an OSS computer or purchase the GS911 tool. Many others in the forum with extensive knowledge of motorcycle repair. Ask the question no matter how dumb it sounds, you will always get an answer some good some bad but you will be able to figure it out. Good luck, ride safe.
Would I buy one knowing what I know now? If price was not the issue, no. Given my income and my riding needs, probably not, knowing what I know now. But since I did buy it at the time under specific conditions, given those same conditions, definitely yes. For me, being a tinkerer and proud to own obscure and unique rides, this fits me well, so selling is not something to do either. I could probably be happy with a good used BMW 650 and heavily modified it for about the same money, but it would still be a common modded BWM everybody in the world has seen. So what is that worth in the end?
Anyone have experience with the adventure bikes windscreen from Australia? Looks nice and tall and $135 online-
I purchased one last year, easy install, holes line up same as the OEM. It does what it's supposed to, keeps the wind off my chest, I can see thru it when looking down, and fresh air in my helmet. I at first bought the OEM wind screen, to low for effective wind block, bobbled my helmet. I'm very satisfied.
