My helmet is becoming almost unbearable to put on because it reaks from sweat. Just wondering if anyone knows of some miracle product or method to get rid of the stench.
I wash my liner every two or three rides. I throw the pieces into a "delicates" laundering bag, and toss it in the washing machine with the rest of the clothing, then let the parts air dry for a full day, before putting them back in the helmet.
Just dump a box of Arm and Hammer in the helmet and agitate before putting on. Keeps your head dry and smelling fresh
I spray diluted simple green in my helmet then hose it out. I don't take the pads out as it is a PITA and they get loose after you do that a few times. Put in front of the heater for a bit and stuff it with news paper to soak up the rest. Works well / simple to do (which means you might actually do it).
I pull the liner and pads out and fill the sink with warm water and laundry soap. Smells good and keeps the stuff from deteriorating. Oils from your skin and hair break down the materials over time so its not just keeping it from smelling bad.
You can wash your helmet with hair shampoo and let it air dry. You do not have to remove the pads to do it. I actually recommend you do not remove the pads.
umm we all missed the point.... Buy a new helmet i mean it obvious he wants the go ahead . we are all like just clean it dude. no you seen a lid you like and have the money for bills in your pocket, bills can wait get the new lid. (just me then) in that case yeh you could just wash it.
That's an awesome idea! When my bike get's dirty, I'll just go get a new one. Thanks Juicypips! You da man.
after cleaning mine i always put a layer of hair conditioner in there. that way your hair doesnt get as nappy on those extra long rides too
Water + biological material = microbe heaven = nasty stink Wash the pads with Woolite, rinse then dip the pads in rubbing alcohol and wring them out. They dry fast and any microbes that might be left after the wash process loose their ability to make more microbes. Stink be gone.
Yep, first, ya gotta wash it in some manner as outlined above...The ~expensive helmets should have well designed liners and pads that can be removed ~easily and over and over ... Bell might use magnets in some of their helmets to hold things in place. --- My next step for helmet care will be the baking soda approach ... Baking soda can do about anything except lube the inners of an engine at a cost everyone can afford. I'm using the stuff in the can below between days when I do not wash the helmet... ~$7 a can ... But it works .. -- I also wear a bandana under my helmet to absorb some sweat ...usually just draped over head under my helmet. But, if I know it's gonna be tough, I tie it on my head like the guys in NAM ... Just a little meaningless homage for the troops(then and now).
Nice. Looks like a Recondo or SF soldier. I used use those "cravats" all the time. Pull them out of the first aid kits. No I wasnt in Vietnam haha
My last helmet had a warning on it "In case of contact with ground, replace helmet." Ok - I will just hook a trailer on the back of my bike and fill it with helmets! On that topic - I replace my helmet every season. I DO wash the interior about 3-4 times a year and always flip it upside down and let it "sun dry" for a couple days after each ride. You will be amazed how much a day in the sun will cure the funk. Since I cannot count how may times my helmet hits the ground (be it a fall or just rolling off the bike) an annual replacement is a good thing. Each winter I take a hole saw and drill a big hole in it and toss it in the trash. I have gotten int he habit as of late to buy the "last year" Bell Moto-x. This year I got a Moto-8 for around $140. SUPER nice helmet. The Moto-9 is > $500 right now but will be < $200 this time next year. They fit great, are lightweight and uber-light compared with other lower end brands. I have owned high dollar stuff and found myself hanging on tot hem too long to "get my money's worth". This process works great for me.
