Hey guys like to get into the action how does the Terra compare to my old thumper the yamaha xt 500 . I really want to get the Terra this spring if i do the xt neds a new home .No room in the garage
I peeled out your posts from the Terra vs f800 thread.... You question is worthy of a separate thread.
It's literally asking what a vintage bike is like compared to a modern bike. Not even apples and oranges.
How does an Ma Bell issue phone from the 80s compare to an iPhone? Vintage bikes are cool, but the Terra works better than the old Yamaha in any way that involves actual riding.
I did not realize it was a vintage bike comparison... Now I feel silly for peeling these posts out from the other thread. Although the original question could have been well intended... not everyone gets to ride modern bikes.
Just to add, it is not the fairest of comparisons but in a nutshell sell the XT and get the Terra. You will not regret it.
My intention was not to compare a vintage bike to a modern bike. I was reading the other thread and somone referrred to the Terra as a thumper presumably because its a big single . Just curious if it has that same torque feel the xt is a wheely machine. HuskyDud your bang on my right leg is bigger than Lance Armstrongs.
I really haven't even ridden mine yet so it might be too soon to comment But I am waiting to compare it to my 08 TE510...which also was a wheely machine. For some reason I have a feeling it will be a little less melodramatic. But all in a good way.
The TR is not a wheelie machine. Long smooth power. You can wheelie but you have to kinda want it. Once up it is wheelies forever with huge flywheel and torque.
Had an XT600, loved that bike, nice torque low down, decent midrange-----and then nothing. Had to spank it to get to 80 mph, squishy suspension, scary brakes, carbed, kickstart, ...... And the XT600 is already quite a step up from your XT500. Only have 600 miles on my Terra, but it is nothing like my XT. The two just do not compare. Like a Ford Model T to a modern car.
XT600 is not that bad. Its a simple bike you can fix everywhere. Would see you RTW but out of pavement Newer XT660R is a very nice bike, much better even for pavement work. Needs some changes out of factory though...
