How much is a 1981 CR 430 worth?

I have found a 1981 CR 430. The owner says it is all original and has about 15 hours on it. He wants $5000 for it. (I bought a CR 430 back in 1981 and thought it was expensive then!) I'm a bit shocked at his asking price. Can some one give me some guidance? Has the 430 become some highly sought after collectors bike? I just want to race the thing and have some fun. Help.

IMHO if he can get $5,00 for it then he should take it and no one in their right mind is going to pay anywhere near that. And I mean not even in the same zip code, time zone, hemisphere, solar system. But it's just one man's opinion.

In my opinion, its worth whatever you are willing to pay... completed restored or origional vintage bikes really are more of a cult following. Look at the cost of components such as shocks, if you would need to replace them or rebuild them how much would that cost you? basically subtract the cost of the items you would have planned on doing to the bike from the asking price and you can see what your paying for the bike itself...

Example, you would plan on buying new Ohlin's shocks at around $1200 for a good set, (now your down to what amounts to $3800, you planned on new tires (down to $3650) planned on a new top end including boring, piston etc (down to 3300) new seat cover (3250) vintage tank propery refinished (2800), relacing of wheels (2500) chain & sprokets (2350)... etc etc it adds up quick, you could buy a basket case for $500 and easily spend another 4 or 5K or more restoring it, and restoring an old Husky isnt the cheapest thing to do, And if your goal is to have a nice vintage bike for show or even to race you just have to do the math and see if it fits in your overall budget for the project...

That being said, to me its more fun to find an old broken down bike thats obviously been rode hard, brused and abused then put away and forgotten about for years, then bring it back to life... is not any cheaper in the long run but makes for better before/after pictures

But eithr way you will likely never get your money back out of it, either way you do it

But the fun factor more than makes up for it

I have a original bore, how many miles/hours?? 82 430XC. Powdercoated frame, DLS front, perfect wheels, 9.7 out of 10 Tank, orig seat, I was flattered being offered $3200 for it. Replace it for that??? Maybe but your labor would be free. Nothing I could buy with $3200 would make me as happy as I am with it.

Definition of collectable item= Anything a bank wont lend money on!

Value of a collectable item= Only worth what someone will pay you at that time for it!

I actually prefer restoring a 'used' engine. Not talking about re-sleeving just maybe boring, going 'over' on piston ...my rational is that the metal is 'set'..(not a metalurigist) but the cylinder is all stressed out..

I am ALWAYS looking for deals on parts, etc...even with 'deals'...it does get pricey

It is worth as much, as someone is willing to pay.....

Find yourself a bike you like and pay what you're happy/can afford to pay.

If I was racing it, I'd like to buy something to rebuild though. That way you can set the whole plot up to suit your requirements, spring/oil rates, tyres, colour e.t.c. and you know in your own mind that if anything fails, it's not because it was due to fail.

The stuff they smoke must be the s#&$.

That Yamaha ..scares the beggebies outta me...stored...all original, translation= everything is dry rotted, hoses, carb may need rebuild, seals etc.
I would rather have a well maintained, ridden, driven etc..vehicle over a garage queen any day!

Well said, it would cost a solid $3k to bring it up to a level I would race it(complete nut/bolt restoration). That said $3500+ to get the bike in that shape.
