08 610, with about 7k miles. Just rode to Cabo, 12-1300 miles.
Went to change oil and found some gunk, and a fairly big chunk attached to the drain plug magnet.

I've always had some gunk on the magnet and was told it was normal, this is a bit more than I usually have (double). The chunk is new though. I have no idea what it is, but my guess is it seems like part of a ring.

The inside of the oil filter was completely clean.

Bike's not making any noises I can detect. Should Stop riding it and tear into it? Should I ride it a little bit and see if more wear shows up?? Or is there anything specific I should be looking for?

Could be some bonding material from the magnets on the flywheel. Pull the cover and check it out. Later George

Thanks George, Will do. I've seen the plastic stuff in the screen before, but this little chuck seems metallic.

I be very tempted to keep on riding. Miss any shifts only to catch the next gear while wound up? Might be a part of a tooth. I have seen this before the bike bike continue to run nearly forever afterworld. No noise and now more stuff in the oil you might be fine. Would pull the case covers and do an visual inspection though.

Thanks Kelly, No missed shifts or anything of the sort. I think I'll run it like an hour tomorrow and then change the oil again and have a look inside.

I'd look inside first, take off all the external covers and inspect as close as you can. If you see nothing or nothing alarming put new oil in and go for a real short ride and re investigate. That particle is just small enough to maybe not worry about if you do not see anything else.

ok, thanks. I guess in the big picture wasting $15 worth of oil is a lot cheaper than the alternative...

Just use cheap auto oil as it is coming right back out anyway. Strain it when you dump it and see what ends up in there (hoping for nothing)

George will always point you in the right direction..

BTW, while you have her open, have you checked your nuts?? I believe Mike Kay and I are just a couple of the 610 riders, 08's none the less, that have had there woodruff keys go bye-bye.

After checking that and what George suggests, I'd do as Kelly says... ride it.. ;)

I already filled it with medium cheap oil :)
(castrol motorcycle oil) I knew it was dumb when I did it, I shoulda dug into the case(s). :banghead:

I did check the nut, the washer on my bike is mangled, It looks to me like it's moved but everyone says theirs looks the same and it's right. When the Key breaks there's a LOT more than what I had in there isn't there?

Silly question perhaps, but was the drain pan clean when the oil was dumped? The plug looks like it might have gone in the drain pan before getting fished out. Could it have picked up something there?

It was cleaned at the last change, and it was not dropped. That crap was def in the motor.

Just a note not sure if the 610/630 are the same as the 510. But I have started to change my oil in my 510 just through the 2 side screens.

I know others are doing the same...maybe pulling the bottom plug is not such a bad idea just to check things out.

All I know is that Oil comes out of both plugs, the screens AND the filter. If you're not opening them you ain't getting all the oil out. And yeah, that main plug is magnetic for a reason...

When my woodruff went south I had about the same amount of material as you do. About half of the key stayed put and I had to dig it out when replacing it. I had to ride about 3 -5 miles after it went to get home and I had the rumble strip vibrations. I had "looked" at mine as well about 500 miles before that had happened. My washer looked mangled as well, which I BELIEVE is from it being bent over, which is supposed to help keep the nut in place. As a matter of fact a couple days after replacing the woodruf, with the help of George over the phone, I realized I hadn't bent my new washer over since I was in such a hurry buttoning it back up as it was getting dark out at the time.
I put the bike on it's side as to not lose so much oil and took the side cover off and took care of that. I also tried some loc-tite on the nut as George suggested. I hope you find out what that may be, as I know how not knowing can be aggravating.

I would listen to George and pull the flywheel. There have been a couple of reports about magnets loosing there bond.
