Bought: Garmin Montana 650T because of topo maps for dirt riding & no need to run Powerlet because of long battery life. Bought: Cortech Dryver GPS bag & mount kit, $60. The best way for me to mount the Cortech Bag on my 2014 TE310: Modify the flat mounting plate to fit the contour of the top handlebar mount. See photo below. I put the flat plate in a vise and put a little kink in it to fit the contour of the top clamp. It doesn't have to be perfect, get it close and it works fine. Center the plate on the top clamp, mark the holes and center punch. The mounting screws are M5-.80 pitch. The M5 tap calls for a .166 diameter pilot drill but I used a 5/32", which is .156" which works fine. Just make sure you use tapping fluid when tapping the aluminum top clamp. I wasn't too concerned about 2 holes making the top clamp weak, they are small enough that it wasn't a bother. See photo below. Next, bolt the kinked plate to the top clamp. Now, bolt the bag to the plate, put the GPS in the bag and get lost! I've used this on the street and dirt, nothing shakes or moves, it's pretty solid. Plus there is enough room to put your spare batteries & wallet under the GPS.
I have found the best way for me to mount gps is on ram mounts. Ram mounts move when you hit them or drag your body over them while dismounting. If you have double take mirrors, your gps can also share one of the same mounts.
They have a mount similar to this on the Flexx bar system. The problem I have had with it and I know others like Ricky Brabec also, is that when you go over the handle bars, your body drags over it. It needs to flex and move out of the way to keep you from having injury. I broke my rigid mount luckily or I might of sustained more injury. Brabec snapped his trail tech aluminum guard completely in half during the Baja 1000 (2012). I believe it is why Trailtech went to a more fluid rotating mount that when you hit it, it moves forward out of the way.
Thanks for the input Tinken . I think I will use the ram mount supplied with my kit and keep the roost shield part that I integrated with the mount. Current setup needs to be better.
Where is the best place to get the feed for the amps rugged mount pictured in some of these pictures ? As well as the serial data input / output wires (if anywhere)? On a husqvarna..I basically wired mine right to the battery..it's fused, but not switched and I'm not sure if I'm 100% happy with that.
That's me and 1st plan is, I'm not going over the bars ... But if I do, I want no blood trail to follow back to the bike ... You guys got some cool mounts for sure ... I just use the stock one with the voyager but it works OK ...What I don't like about the stock mount is that someone can walk up and snap it off and be gone in < 3 seconds ... -- I really like this bag idea ... We get a lot of rain here and I can't risk getting the voyager wet and dry and wet and dry ... I just have 2 batteries for my voyager and the wall-socket charger... And on rides, I use it only as needed to conserve power. Don't even have any power going to the device on the bike.
I used the bracket with the kit. The only thing is now I need the trail tech headlight because now the voyager doesn't allow the oem light to settle against the forks. I had to use zip ties to make it work but that's ok for now . Better my bike passes the safety inspection at KOM
