I have been buying some Ignition parts from Horse Power Ignition. Due to there Web Catalog being way to complicated I ordered a wrong part and am now getting the right one. Since I'm in contact with them I could clear things up a bit. All I'm concerned about is the Crank Taper and the Mounting location on the Main Cases. As far as I know the 82-88 250-430-500 are all the same. Dosen't matter what the bike came with internal or external the Crank Taper and Mounting location is the same right ? So how far back is this true, all the way back to 1972 ? OK, so what about the 125's ? 4 Strokes ?

There is an interesting article in the old Husky Club Newsletters about the different tapers. I'll see if I can find it.
It is possible that the taper angles are all the same, just the start diameter that changes.

The 125 changed to the new taper in '82 also. The Husky Club article says it did not and it is wrong because I have swapped '82+ 250 ignitions onto my '82 and '83 125/175s many times. Prior to '82 there are two other tapers that are different from the '82+ taper, one really big one for any bike with FEMSA points ignitions and that taper is also used on 390s, and the other is smaller and what I will call the Motoplat taper, it is also the same size as a Sachs 125.

My 360 which I have always assumed was a 1976 like sold to me as has the large taper. The auto crank, the 420 being the one I have inspected, has the small taper but the key is cut in a different spot which may or may not work out as planned with the attachment points to the case. The ignition says Amol on it somewhere like the British carburetors. That probably counts as pre 82. The four stroke cases are probably a copy of the two cycle ones in the ignition area. My te510 has a large in diameter unit with two wires for power as I recall.

I found the horsepower ignition web site. I looked at the one with external rotor for 1982 to 1991 250wr and a bit narrower for cr. Does that sound right, that is out of this left kick section. It does show an advance curve.

They sell on line yet I see five dealers in the USA in four separate places. That seems a bit strange. You have to pay the vat if you buy from Europe?

    My 82 250,

The crank taper and magneto plate mounting was the same on both the WR and the CR.

When I worked on my brother in laws, 81 WR390, I am sure the taper was the same.

I've installed the same tapered flywheels on 250 & 430. The 390 cr/or has a larger taper with a heavier flywheel. If I remember correctly I installed a internal rotor in a 125 with the cr stator (1985 cr 125).

Note; In the engineering group I worked for they had problems between the English imperial measuring system and the metric tapers. Now some American companies are new to metric tapers. I'm not sure how exact they are matched. I use lapping compound to check all the mating tapers before assembly. The similar chrome polish is a very fine lapping compound. I'm not sure how far the American knowledge has advanced with the metric system. Everyone new to the metric system is getting a education.

    Hi Bill,

I will stand corrected with the 390,

it was 26 years ago when I was working on the WR250 and the WR390.

My memory isn't so good now!

They say there's a third different taper but I only seen two so far. Maybe the early 125 had a smaller taper?

I got an 84 250CR crankshaft from eBay a few years ago and found the ignition taper to be smaller diameter than the WRs I have

I think I have an 86 WR400. the Serial number prefix is correct for that year but the rest of the numbers are not in the right sequence-
    WP13207
Anyways, my stator is bad. The taper measures 14.3mm diameter as shown on the Horsepower website. They do not appear to have a replacement kit of my bike.
Is there a current Motoplat repair facility in the US?
