Called AMS in Arizona, ProForm pipe dealer, today about a pipe for a 82 430. They said ProForm quit making them because the labor time was too long and they make more money on other pipes. I asked them if they would make one on a special order, material/labor and they said no. I then asked if it was a minimum issue-no.

Yep, when a production facility gets set up for what is selling, they don't want to shut a line down to do a one-off that would probably take as much time as building 5 or 10 popular pipes. Can't blame them, I would do the same thing if it was my factory, but it is frustrating when you are on the buying end of something you can't find..... :(

I have to really LOOK to find stuff and if I cant find it I end up going to a machinist ...even then they dont want to do small stuff.
one shop has had a part of mine, for a compressor for over a year...the economy sux because of service like what is being posted here.
I wanted flourscent fixtures installed in my garage (about 9+ fixtures)... 3 different companies came out & I asked for bids....none called back.

Every contractor around is crying for business. Friend couldn't even get more than one to come give him an estimate on a deck with an overhang. Same story, the one that did come out never gave him the bid.....

Short run Machine shops are hard to find... no money in one off's... I sell Technical machining for a medium to high volume Job Shop ... guys that have survived tend to be overloaded, highly skilled and demand/dictate premium prices for their work... the outsourcing of America has not been kind to Machining.

Hey, can I send you a 5/8" CrMo rod to be turned down to 15mm for an rear axle?
I've got a little Atlas/Craftsman lathe but I don't trust it on that skinny and long of a part.

I'm looking forward to seeing that Pipe!... Britt is on my short list for making a pipe for my 390 ....

I may have a small milling job for you in the near future...i've been looking for a one off shop that doesn't charge an arm and a leg.... and tool and die makers make the best parts... they tend to be very detail oriented !

I am currently unemployed as an engineer because I have ASME degree instead of BSME. Amonst the worst mistakes I have ever made is listen to my wife and part with the contents of my part time machining business that she did not support because I could not work enough hours to make real money because I had to work full time as toolmaker/experimental machinist to carry benefits. I had all the equipment for example to built the fixture to machine HuskyDogg's clutch covers, the ability to reverse engineer the hole and shaft location, and machine the castings and bushings needed. I sold off everything in 2000 and in 2002 suffered the first layoff in over 20 years. If I had kept that equipment I could have gone back into business as I would have had the manhours available to make a go of it as my wife started working fulltime then and carring the benefits. I want to pick up a lower cost CNC mill and a small lathe to try to get started again because all I see available for me right now is short term contract assignments and 2nd shift operator assignments. She went into my barn I built looking for a cat and complained about the "junk" in the barn. 4 Husqvarnas in progress of repair and restoration, a 1978 Husky project bike that may get a TT500 engine or 82 430WR engine that needs a home. Junk to her but the stuff of dreams to guys like us.
