I'm planning a summer trip, and I would like to install a power outlet on my 610 so that I can take my GPS along. I was thinking of one like this:

    http://www.aerostich.com/all-weather-power-outlet-standard-adapter-plug.html

    Or maybe one of these:

I don't want to cut into the wiring on my bike, since I'm still under warranty, and I don't see the need to have it connected to the ignition. I have never wired this sort of thing before, and I'm looking for some guidance. My thought is to run it straight to the battery with some kind of switch mounted on the bars. I have no clue if I need relays, fuses, or other electrical components. If you've set up this sort of thing, please enlighten me. :notworthy:

I'd run it straight to the battery. At any rate you could put a switch in if you thought that would save you from running the battery down accidentally. $10 at Amazon and I'm thinking you could get it cheaper at an auto parts store...just the fixture...then find 6 ft of the right gauge wire.

I saw where George put one of his headlights on a guy's bike and the guy wanted an on/off switch so he just mounted it in-line on the bars, just a rocker switch of sorts. He did encase the wires in flexible conduit.

ETA I looked at my Garmin car adaptor and it's not obvious that it has a fuse. I'm pretty sure there's some room in the fuse section under the seat of the bike to add another fuse if you wanted, then just connect it in line.

As for mounting (the outlet), I'd just zip-tie it to some other wires and just make sure nothing binds or rubs.

I like the HDB mount, and I do have HDB handguards, so that should work well. Does it just mount using the two top clamp bolts on either side? After looking at the Powerlet website, I'm a bit confused as to which Powerlet outlet I would need to buy to work with the HDB mount and my GPS. You say BMW, but is a BMW outlet a regular cigarette lighter type outlet? I was thinking BMW ones were a different size. My GPS will plugs in to a cigarette type outlet.

I hard wired my Gamin GPS using the right cable here...

has the head for the GPS and bare wires for the bat end. Was about $15-$20. Works great. Routed it up by my RAM mount and just toss the GPS int he mount and plug it in. Came with an inline waterproof fuse. Works great.

if your confused by their site call them. Great people. i have ridden with the owner, hard core adventurer for sure.

The BMW and Powerlet sockets are the same size/configuration. They are smaller than the standard cigarette plug (at least in the U.S.).

Thanks for that link. Pretty cool solution .... but $87.50 for my model. Ouch.

I think any of the powerlet plugs work in the HDB mount. The plugs are about $18. For 27 at my local dealer I got a whole kit from Gerbing with the plug and all of the wiring to hook it to the battery.

And yea it just goes in the top clamp holes, you gotta get slightly longer bolts.

If you have the HDB/s what not use a 1/8th inch plug and wire in into one of the switch holes in the top clamp. Clean, simple and you already have the mount / hole to do it. :excuseme:

We may have other things planned. There's only four there, machine guns, rocket launcher, pillion eject, and I personally like to leave one one open for future use.

I like the idea of the 1/th inch plug. Do you have a picture or an example of what you are talking about?

    I like that idea
What would you use for a cap when not in use, or do they make them with caps ?

Well, see there goes the TBD, now it has to be a selector switch.

I sure they do. There is about every configuration of those jacks from electrical supply places.

Well I'm leaning towards the HDB mount and Powerlet outlet, but the only thing I don't like is having to use an adapter to convert the Powerlet to cigarette style. Do any of you with regular cigarette type outlets have pics of where you mounted yours? I liked the hardwire idea too, but didn't see the correct one for my particular GPS.

You definitely want the Powerlet socket. Cigarette plug comes loose with all the vibrations. Powerlet makes a universal plug that fits both cigarette and powerlet style sockets. That's what I use for my gps. It's part # PPL-005:

I made mine before HDB made thier mounts, but I like the look of the HDB mounts.
    good luck

Stumbled upon this thread....wondering if this would work for Gerbings heated liner and gloves...can the (SM)610 handle that kind of power draw?

Here's what I rigged up on my DR650. The 610 has a very similar brakeline guide to use as a mount point. I welded the bracket to the guide so the clamp bolt would screw in all the way, but it could easily be lapped without having to get a longer bolt.

The outlet is just a $7 thing for boats, I found in on amazon.

Luckily the DR has an extra wire behind the headlight shroud carrying 12v (switched) so accesories won't get forgotten and kill the battery  I am sure a similar wire could be tapped on the 610.
