So my 84 IT200 has been sitting in the garage sans top end for almost 10 years. I've been looking for a barrel to convert it back to a 200 as it's actually a 232 thanks to the original owner (my Dad) having hot rodded it back in the 80s. IT was great to ride with lots of power but it slipped a ring which started hanging in a port making it sound like a squealing pig. Even used top ends seem impossible to find though I have seen whole engines on EBay for around $500. That's about the cost to have the barrel re sleeved. So I decided to try Craig's list and scored! Found me a complete running 85 and brought it home for $360. It's had a hard life but the motor is solid and the tyranny seems to be in good shape. It's all there and it was great to take it for a putt around the block. So since I've got a lousy summer cold I don't want to share at work, today I'm going to clean it up and decide whether I'm just going to do a motor transplant into mine, or steal the top end. Now my honey can ride with me. She's very excited and so am I! Pics to follow
Always liked IT200's but have trouble riding bikes with drum brakes any more. Its my one big dislike of older bikes. I can deal with the other stuff but good brakes are a must.
Yeah, I had an IT and then went to the first KDX200 with a front disc, '86 or '87, the difference was huge!
True, I also occasionally look for a set of forks from an 86 which had a front disc. I think YZ forks will also work, but for now it's all good. Lousy brakes teach you to ride carefully!
Here she is, not pretty, but useful. Looks like the head gasket is a little leaky, but it's all there and copper gaskets can be baked sprayed and easily reused. The trip meter is in great shape which is awesome since mine got smashed years ago. Between this donor and my bike I should be good to go with lots of spares.
I spent about an hour and a half scraping pipe goo off the thing today. I also fiddled with the carb settings even though I plan to completely tear it down and unstick the float. The pilot air screw was turned all the way in! Opened it up a full turn and the bottom end came back. Looking like a motor swap at this time. Still have some major gunk removal yet. Hoping to do perform transplant surgery tomorrow!
looks like stock 43mm KYBs 2 me i thought z-spoke wheels where 84 only at least on YZs ed my old IT 79 good bike be sweet if they brought it back
Those are stock same as my 84. However the WP shock is surely not. The IT may have had crap brakes, but it's basically a YZ woods weapon. I'll put em side by each tomorrow...you'll see.
In case you haven't tried it I highly recommend Simple Green Motorsports Cleaner. It totally cut the goo and its not harsh on paint etc. And it is environmentally friendly like all their stuff! Thanks for turning me on to it Dad!
Off with its head! We've got a winner...smooth bore with no evidence of seizure. Rings are free and the gasket slid right off. Base gasket is good so this is as far as it's coming apart. A little more clean up, some rattle can engine paint, freshen up the gasket and its ready to go into the recipient patient.
Best stuff i ever use, biodegradable and works fantastic. Does not hurt plastic or metac and is non etching. Usually stuff like this does not work, this does.
Never seen that down here. I was really impressed with the SG. It's even Boeing certified. I just needed a nylon brush to get the heavy stuff off. Back to work...time to get the motor finished up and dig out my IT.
Yep this is still going to be a dirt bike, not a museum piece. I did make sure to pop for the real ceramic engine paint! Got it mostly masked. Just needed to take a break from the heat. The gasket is all cleaned and annealed and ready for the magic spray. Once I get some paint on it, I'm bringing the carb inside to clean it up and watch some football.
