Hello all, Well, It's been a while since I posted here. But wanted to let everyone know I finally got one. It's a 2000 CR250. It's certainly got some issues but I'm happy to rebuild it. I did have questions about the engine though, and best place to find parts. Main question right now is what's the correct compression for the 2000 CR250? I tested and got 180 PSI.
Nice bike and good luck on the riding ... I had a 2002 CR250 (see the avatar) ... Clueless on the PSI stuff ... It was a non-event on my bike That's a good looking bike stand also ... PS -- What pipe is on that bike and are you really in Japan?
Suppose I should update the Japan location, as I just got back to the US. As for the bike I've no idea. It's pretty rusted out. Mostly trying to figure out the health of the engine. I don't really want to tear it down this weekend if 180psi is within spec. Since I'm still hunting for parts.
Ok and good luck ... Just from my previous experiences with my 2t 250cc Huskies ... I'd ride it and try the pin-it test ...
I DONT KNOW WHAT SPECS ARE BUT 180 PSI IS PLENTY TO BAD THE TANKS ALL BROWNED OUT THOSE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AWESOME KELLY LOVES HIS 02 BUT HE'S ATE UP HE LOVES'EM ALL LOL
That pipe will come up with a little work Vht it black an will look sweet or if yo wanted the Pimp look polish it. Looks like a salvini. 180 psi? I think anything over 100 Is healthy just remember the 180 figure for later Test it in a few months an see what its like. Tanks are cheap here but for old grey ones. Nice find.
Pip may be stock i just assumed there were rings of weld Near the kicker. But fmf do pipes plenty of peeps will chime in.
Tank is brown from sitting for almost 5 years. Gonna drain it and flush it out. Just got back from the 8 hour round trip. Got the bike for $800. Will be doing a full tear down of the bike for inspection. Need to fix the waterpump as the clutch is completely dry, and has no coolant remaining. Figure I got a week work of work ahead of me.
180# is good. As far as parts, if you have a good Husky dealer near you start there. If not, try Hall's. Looks like nothing more than a little TLC will bring it back to life. Personally, I think you got a good deal.
There's a really good bike under all that grung. The paint on the older motor wasn't worth a crap. Stripping it off will make it look a lot better. The pipe will probable need sandblasting. It looks a little far gone of a scotchbrite pad. Get an air filter wash cover and a pipe plug and go to town on it with a power washer, some S100, a good scrub brush and you'll be amazed at what you have there.
Managed to salvage about 70% of the exhaust with a scotch bright. Most of the rust was surface. Only a few really bad spots. I"ll take a pic in the morning as I've spent the better part of two hours using elbow grease. Cleaned the engine up good so far. Used degreasing gel hand washed it. Still need to remove the Radiators and carb to get a full scrub in. Will us the cheap method of cleaning "Garbage bag on the filter" and take my time. Bike will have plenty of time to dry, since I can't order a waterpump rebuild kit and fork seals till monday. I also checked the inside of the fuel tank, and it's spotless with no sign of aging. Seems the browning was just starting, and didn't get through the entire tank. Will scrub it good, and condition it to try and salvage the tank for a bit. Should hopefully be able to complete the restoration by next weekend.
Question, I've got what appears to be a oil fill port on the left side of the bike. I assume that's for the clutch. How much oil should be used and recommended weight? Right now, it's got zero
Theres a window in the clutch case side, put bike On paddock stand and fill to halfway, 70 -cl I think dont quote me on that tho. 10-40 i use or light gear oil
Not quite a litre 100 centilitres is a litre 70 centilitres is ball park figure that i seem to Remember reading somewhere, manual here or a dream. Edit i deleted a nought my bad confused myself with ml n cl
Should be fine make sure its wet clutch compatible N.b being clear ive edited previous post as mixed cl up With ml , doh
Another question. I've finally started putting the bike back together, but I cannot find the air vent valve/bolt on the head. I want to add fresh coolant, but not sure how to bleed any excess air in the system.
