Curious if any one has used this oil filter yet and what there experiences were. Last night I tried to use and it did not feel right. Did not go in far enough and did not seem to fit the cap good. The BMW oil filter has a little play on the end cap and slides all the way in no problems. K&n seems like it is very tight and almost a press fit like you have to press it on the pipe by tightening the three bolts. Thank you for any comments.
Mine was sent directly from K&N so I would have to assume its right. Just felt it was a few mm's too small around the neck and did not slide on far enough. then did not slide into the the cap like most. Crazy I have 4 more that should be here in a day and I will see if those are different. Thanks for the help. Maybe thats why i got them for $4 each. LOL
Just for info. K&N and Hi-Flo are the same company. The 2 filters are exactly the same but the Hi-Flo is cheaper. The only difference is the look of the box it is packaged in. well they are cheaper in my area. Hi-Flo # is HF-151 go figure.
Make sure you coat the o-ring inside the filter with clean oil first, it will slide right on. It's always a good idea to pre soak your filter first with fresh oil (just pour it inside and all over). Cuts down on the time your engine runs without oil on first start up. Your engine dosent need to push oil through a dry filter before it reaches the vital parts.
see the K&N filter I have has a different style where it goes over the pipe. The BMW filter has a bigger rubber fitting and the K&N is mostly metal except on the inside of the hole is a rubber o ring.
The KN151 filter I bought looked significantly different than the OEM filter that came with my bike. I also showed both those filters to someone that understands these types of things, and he agreed. I'm going to use the OEM filter from now on. Obviously there are other opinions on the matter, just wanted to give mine.
Anybody know what the BMW guys think of the K&N filter. I bought a couple and was going to change my oil this weekend. I will still use the KN151, but wasn't aware of much difference. I will go check out he GS threads and see what the opinions of hte filter are.
I used the K&N-151 in my F650GS (same basic engine). I used the K&N-151 in my last TR650 oil change. From what I have seen, I wouldn't hesitate to use any K&N over any OEM filter.
The filter looks comparable but for me it seemed I had to force it on and I was not excited about that. I did put oil around the ring. Though the filter did not sit in the cap as far as the oem filter. That is where my concern was I did not want to use the three bolts to press the filter in. I have 4 more on the way and I will see if there is a difference
I think I've performed 5 oil changes on the Terra so far, and all but one (the first one @ 100 miles), I changed the oil filter and used the KN151. Beware, on the last oil change, the filter did not include the interior o-ring... so I pulled it out of the used filter and mounted it inside the new one. I really doubt the o-ring would have gotten much abuse over the period of 2 months and 3k miles, so it was worth the risk. If I do get another faulty one though, K&N will be getting nasty-gram email.
I guess what I was dealing with on the oil filter was being over cautious. Thanks for the infor. My next oil change coming up shortly try to use the filter then.
Just tried it again and the same filter seems to be about a mm off. The stock oil filter slides in and the cap butts up to the oil filter housing easily. When I try the k&N it acts like the throat of the filter is a little small and does not slide far enough on the pipe inside and the cap does not butt up to the oil filter housing.Crazy no one has noticed this maybe k&N changed their design a little or I got one a little off.
SO I spoke with three dealerships and they confirmed the K&N 151 is slightly too large. Getting three from a dealership in Miami delivered. Although most dealerships I have come across do not stock it.
You're right, there's a fitment issue. K&N afaik DOES NOT list any of their filters for use in the TR. The issue is the metal end cap on the K&N is slightly larger in diameter than the OEM & does not fit into the recess of the oil filter cover plate without using some force. I did an oil change today, first time using the K&N & noticed the issue. With a some muscle the K&N pressed into the cover plate. I suppose it's possible to cause the filter back plate to distort if too much force is used which may in turn cause the pressure relief valve to not seat completely. Tolerances may vary a bit from bike to bike. Edit: The pressed fit backplate over the oil filter end cap may impede the oil pathway during bypass valve operation.
I bought 5 k&n filters and since it is not right will probably just send them back. The bypass on the k&n has a weaker spring so it will open sooner and if you change your oil as often as I do even if the bypass is compromised I doubt it will matter. Although for me if it is not right I won't sleep as easy at night until it is. So I am out on the k&n,s.
