Pushed the bike up the drive and applied the front brake and heard a knock, had a feeling it may be the headstock bearings but maybe forks, anyone else had this?
Yes. Never figured out what it was, but if I brake really hard on pavement I can get it to make that noise. Almost sounds like something is breaking or tweaking the forks.
I hear the same thing, when I push it out of my shed on my lawn. I've pushed that thing all over my dam yard with my ear near every front end part to figure out where it is coming from. My guess is they used cheap low tolerance bearings and race's in the triple tree. If I find it getting worse ill get them replaced at a bearing shop with some higher tolerance fit bearings. Ive actually been looking in the Terra service manual for the torque on the triple tree nut. The witness mark on the nut hasent moved since factory but I was gona break the torque and try it again, see if that helps. Havent found the torque spec's yet though.
I think the way to check is to jack up the front and push and pull the legs, not sure about the clutch cable but will have a look in the morning.
Same issue here, BMW techs couldn't figure it out. There is a knock when the suspension changes direction (up and down).
Does the TR650 have a floating rotor? I've noticed this knock or click when hitting the brakes on other bikes I own. Usually when you push it backwards and hit the brakes.
Lifted up the bike last weekend and found no play in the forks so its either the brake as MotoFan says or the forks at full extension!
Replicate the fork dive without using the brakes. You can run it into a block or wall at slow speed, maybe with a friend pushing and balancing. My first thought was brakes. I can't imagine bottoming out or fully extending the forks just pushing it around and hitting the brake.
Well if you run it up a small curb without using the brakes, there is a small knock and you feel it through the bars and that's without using the brakes. To me if the forks are at their highest point ie fully extended with no compression, there seems to be play that may contribute to the knock as it does it after the brakes are released and the forks come back to rest
I've noticed the knock also. It feels inside the forks, to me. I think it's a topping out knock....possibly. My steering bearings are fine & proper. There is no excess play there. I'll inspect the forks carefully some day whenever I take them apart for servicing. Until then, I'm not losing any sleep over it. Everything seems to be functioning correctly. I've inspected the important areas carefully at least three times. HF
I was thinking it was the fork valves. While seemingly loud it does correlate to when the fork changes from compression to rebounding.
I didn't start hearing/noticing this until this afternoon when I blew my fork seals. It has me worried. Also: What is up with the cost of a set of fork oil/dust seals?! I just paid 150 bucks and it'll be two weeks for them to get here.
Very interesting... I also heard this type of knocking noise coming from the front of my Terra, kind of cklicking or ratteling and i was afraid of something broken. Had several phone calls to the dealer i bought the bike from. He tested some brand new Terras and Stradas in his show room. All this bikes made this clicking/knocking noise when compressing/rebounding the fork. So i made call to the german importer of husqvarna. He also tested his brand new Terras... after testing six bikes his result was that all of them make this special noise. A few weeks after this call i made an appointmend with a husky dealer specialised on shock equipment, because i wanted to know what the cause of this noise is. He was testing an hearing more than one hour at my Terra. His result: When compressing/rebounding the fork the springs are beating minimal to the inner fork tube. His phone call to the importeur gave the same result, nearly every Terra/Strade is making this special noise. All of them told me that this is nothing to worry about... so i will trust in this statement. Until now everything works fine, no leaks, no loose... seems to be only an unpleasant thing.
Norland, Thanks for digging so deep on this. It is a relief to know that nothing internal is loose or broken. Like Highfive, I have gone all over my front end and confirmed that nothing external was loose or broken, but I was never sure on the internals. That said, it still sounds and feels like crap and detracts from an otherwise solid feeling bike. I wonder if there is a way to shim the springs to stop it from beating/banging against the tube.
I have the same issue with my TERRA. It's only coming from one fork. I definitely intend to get this sorted. The one that doesn't knock feels smooth up and down whilst the knocking one (apart from knocking) feels sticky. I will keep you posted on how/if I get it sorted...
mine does the same when the forks change direction....I am pleased we all have the same fault and it has been nothing more than any annoying knock.
My Terra has the problem. The dealer in conjunction with the distributor is reasonably keen to have it fixed noting that it appears only to be an irritant and not a material problem.
If I'm rolling backward and hit the front break, or just plain ol yank up on the bars, I hear a small clunk. Everytime. 250 miles on the bike. It sounds like a loose bearing, or mount somewhere, not sure...
