I'm looking for a bike for my fiance. She knows how to ride already, but this will be her first bike. I am looking for something light weight and good handling. Power isn't a concern right now. I know both these bikes can be pretty potent racers, but with a flywheel weight can they be tamed down to be more forgiving? She recently sat on a KX 100 and really liked it, no riding just sitting. I want to get her something she is comfortable on and fits her size. I am kinda leaning towards the KTM for personal reasons, but I won't be the one riding it. So I'm looking for input from those who have experience with these bikes. Hopefully some female riders will chime in. Thanks for any advice.
The KX100 is a great wife bike. Small, good non violent power, real suspension and brakes, ez to kick. I dont know anything about the KTM.
Just looked that KTM up, looks more modern and probably better for faster pilots. Guessing by looking. :>) Nice bike. I owned and actually rode a KX100 for a while. Built squirrel trails at a buddies house and raced them around. Surprisingly versatile, kids moto bike, wife trail bike, dads toy. They are fun and EZ. Surprisingly on our trail system I was just as fast on what felt like a much slower DRZ125. But I digress. :>)
It just so happens I built my wife both of these bikes. The kx has a junk kick starter and very little low end but still a good bike. If I knew EFM could build an auto clutch for it probably wouldn't of sold it for the ktm sx 105.The reason we went ktm was for the rekluse auto and the bike had better low end. I know Troffer88 put a Lectron carb on his daughters kx 100 and that did a lot to boost the the low end and smooth out the power band. the kx hits hard in the mid.In my situation I feel both are a good bike with a Lectron and auto clutch with a little flywheel weight added for a girl friend or wife. They also make over size tanks for both and promoto billet also makes a kickstand or i think trail tech for the KX.I used the pmb kickstand for my 06 xc300 for the sx105 just had to weld on a lower tab. Hope this helps.
Yep Lectron and a flywheel weight made it a great little trail bike . Super cheap parts availability to boot.
This This helps a lot. Thanks. Did you have any reliability problems with either? It seems like a 50/50 shot on whether the Ktm crank will last 30 hours or several hundred.
My KX has been bomb proof . I think while great bikes in there own right, the KTM's are a little high strung and parts are definitely more money.
That's the answer. Build her a trick DRZ 125. I built one as a mini racer about ten years ago and it was a blast. I wish I never sold it.
Never had any crank problems but then again she never rung it out like they do racing.Parts can be had easily for both but the kx parts cheaper. Both are good. Maintenance would be a little easier with sx because of thwithe side panel access and no linkage. They also make an adjustable lower shock bushing to adjust the seat height for the sx. Either way you'll probably be riding it more than her because they are so fun to screw off on.The only problem I had with either was the pos cast kick start on the kx bending and the bolt that holds kick start on the sx coming loose. You cant go wrong either way.
I hear a lot of guys are buying KTM Freerides for their 'wife' over here. Lots more money I guess, but if she let's you ride it.....could be fun
She has the KTM 85XC other than the wheels and cylinder same as a 105. Had it re-sprung for an adult and still had it lowered two inches for her, best money I ever spent. We have done the supper mini thing before and still have them for ice racing and I don't feel they are the same off road. You get more goodies on the KTM off the showroom floor than a stock KX, YZ or RM and any well built mini. You can also add the 150r to that list. Only thing we added was a Clark oversized tank just for more range. She will add a recluse this year and just run it. I have gone round and round with lesser bikes and now that she is on a real dirt bike she could not be happier. I have learned that had I spent the money once I would have saved far more in the end. Don't cheep out and get some kids left over well worn anything you will end up over hauling repairing and replacing almost everything. She has over 3000$ in a 1984 KDX 80 ! A bike that was 780$ new ,not kidding about that. Fully restored almost all NOS and after all that I buy the new KTM because at the end of it all its was just a used dirt bike. Only good thing is she knows what every part is and what its worth how to look them up ect. A new silencer showed up from over seas the other day, NOS brand spanking new. She still looks for little things on and off so who am I to bitch. Want to ride more ? Want less crap about riding ? Want to go no vacation and ride ? Buy the best bike you can and set it up for her and her needs.
A very simple and accurate piece of advice. Thanks. I have lately been leaning towards a KX 100 simply because of their availability. I'd prefer the KTM, but they don't pop up often around here and when they do they seem to go fast.
