late 70's / 81 kick starter gear tips/ advise. older case

There are three different sizes on ratchet gears for the kick starter. Each size engine has a different diameter gear. The position of the upward motion stop determines how far the driver and driven engagement teeth are apart. There needs to be a space between these two gears. If the space is too big we get less kick starter movement. If there is no space these gears will violently ratchet when the engine is running. It will destroy the gears. I have seen this with the used engines and assorted used parts. The position of the kick starter determines this gap when the kick starter is against the up stop. I like to set it as close as possible on this air gap between these two gears so they can't bang into each other. Make sure it's set correctly. Enjoy the ride for many years.

1 HAVE A 1976 HUSKY 175 IT HAS NEW REBUILT ENGINE I RECEIVED IT WITH COVERS NOT INSTALLED I HAVE INSTALLED THE LEFT COVER MANY TIMES
BUT IT WILL NOT ENGAGE WITH THE GEAR
