  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

LONG RANGE TANK ON TE510 2009 MODEL

HI there

Has anyone got any experiences with long range tanks fitted to the Husky TE510. I am getting mixed reports about the IMS 3.0 Gallon tank. Any other tanks worth looking at ???

Even though Safari is a good Aussie company ( and local ) I do not really want a 16 ltr fuel tank and it is way too big...

Any suggestions or pictures would be great.

I have both the Safari and the IMS. At 3 gallons the IMS is a good all around tank that will eventually start leaking at the fuel pump but can be fixed. I use mostly the IMS, mine started leaking so I removed the fuel pump and filed the surface flat again and used some Permatex #2 (I think, the gooey stuff that does not harden) and that solved my leak. The IMS doesn't block airflow so the bike runs cooler in the slow tight stuff which is what I ride mostly. The only time I use the Safari is when I'm going on long adventure rides where I need to go 150 plus miles between fuel stops, the Safari is very well made but it seems to block some airflow, not good in the slow technical areas but fine at speed and its very heavy when full, too heavy in single track. As far as I know, these are your only options for aftermarket tanks.

I have the IMS tank and it's performed flawlessly for 2K miles. I think some of the early tanks had leak problems around the pump seal area. I don't think that has been a problem for a long time.

hummm I did have the IMS ... and I sold it ... it's to large and leak ! The Safari is very slim like the origine one and it serve as radiator protecteur too ! that's a very good point and it's better manufactured. I will put some pictures ... from the office I do not have access to my dropbox but tonight I will.

The 09 stated the leak at 700 miles, and the 08 has over 5,500 and no leaks. Doesn't matter when the tank was manufactured, it's a dice roll.

I bought my black IMS 3gallon used in 2009/2010. The size is perfect for me- If I know I don't need 3 gallons I don't fill it. More cappacity would be overkill for me. I did LAB2V with it in 2010 and did not have fuel issues. I like the stock tank's narowness a little better for singletrack but and used to the IMS at this point. If I were only doing enduros and Hariscrambles where fuel was not an issue (fuel/time available at halfpoint) I'd use the stock tank, but I haven't been doing any racing at all the last few years.

It did not leak until mid 2011 (at the pump seal). It was a dropplet per hour I'd guess.

I took the tank off- inspected put it back together: carefully tightented the bolts in a pattern. Still the slightest leak appeared when fuel was present.

Then I took the tank off, took the fuel pump out. Inspected the base that meets the tank. Carefully removed the oring. There were small granualls of sand and dirt stuck to the underside of the oring and in the channel it runs on the pump. I carefully cleaned the pump base and oring. Then I carefully reassembled and tightended the pump bolts. Full of speculation- I filled the tank and put it facing upward in a washtub so that if it leaked it would be contained. I left it like that for a week and checked it every day. Not a drop dripped. I then put the tank on the bike. It has not leaked since. Its been long enough and with enough hard miles to tell.

So while the IMS seems prone to leaks at the pump due to the base getting warped sometimes you do get lucky. I do think over torqing the bolts can leed to problems or increase the likelyhood. My next step was going to be making a gasket to put underneethe the oring- just to add some more clearence for imperfections. My buddy sent back 3 IMS tanks before he found one that did not leak for him. Fortunately they were very responsive to his issues and backed their product, too bad it took so many attempts though. I assume post manufacturing/ preshippment inspections were not getting done as well as they should have been.

WOW that looks great in black with the graphics, you hardly notice it. I bet if you only put 3 gallons in it for regular riding it might hold the fuel even lower than stock. Very nice.

Yah, I cleaned it and even tried a new o-ring, still leaked. I'll try the IMS route and see if they respond.

Hi mate,
I fitted a Safari tank a couple of weeks ago. Fit up was perfect. I went for the translucent one. I was worried about the weight but to be honest, even when 90% full, I didn't notice any difference at all. It's comfortable to ride with, we were riding mostly fast open trails over the Australia Day weekend and the bike didn't get too hot but it was fairly cool - it'll possibly get a bit hot in tight, slow stuff in summer as the tank does close in around the radiator a bit.
So far I'm wrapped with it.
