looking for info, rad fan kits and stronger battery !

i have an 05 TE510 and had a boiling issue today because i left it idling after the battery went flat waiting for two lost riders ! so...

where can i get a fan kit for it and whats a good upgraded battery to stock item ? it was fine until i stalled it and flooded on a huge hill ! and then flattened it trying to start it ! bump start worked but kicking it never did !! and a guy on a 08 also couldnt start his by kicking either brand new bike ! (LATE REGISTERED !)

so, where/what to buy to resolve these 2 issues ? oh, and in Oz !

G'day Mate, I had a similar issue with my 04 TE510 but has a TC cam in it, any slow riding/hill climbs/sitting still on idle for too long would cause it to overheat. I was just using a regular coolant.

Spoke to the boys at Full Throttle and they suggested Engine Ice before mounting a fan. Its a ready to use high performance coolant.
Tried this and only time it has over heated was on a massive hill climb where I got it stuck on a slippery rock. I stongly recommend it. Costs $30 AUD for 1.89L.


With your starting issue I've had similar problem where I'd never been able to kick start my bike even when warm, just relied on the elec start which I'd rather be able to do both just in case. Ended up figuring out that if I was to hold the decomp lever in, get it to top dead center then as I was kicking the bike, release the lever 1/4 way through the kick and it would fire straight up. Takes a bit of practice but works a treat.
Now the only time I use Elec start is when its a cold start, after that I kick as much as I can.

yeah got the hot start but i am 65 kilos ! and kicking this is a nightmare ! hope the bigger battery power helps, thats why it boiled ! bugger !

put my battery on charge overnight and turned the bike over perfect so i know its got the beef to do it but i reckon a new stronger one is the way to go and ive got the battery sorted (just to buy it)

now focusing on the rad fan kit.. i know they are available, but from where ?

I know Ballards in Aus sell them. $170 though, heard the dealers are around the same price. I'd be trying the Engine Ice before travelling down that route, unless your planning on doing a lot of sitting still.

Since I can't kick start my TE510 either, I went with the 5.0 TurnTech battery. It's been working really good.

Switching to Engine Ice helped my 510, but ZIP-TY waterless coolant seems to be working even better.

will look into it cheers ! i dont plan on sitting still too often , and would have turned it off if it was going to start off the button so that was why... not set in stone yet, may not bother but i dont like cooking engines on hill climbs in 40 celsius in aussie queensland summers either !!

I just ordered the 5 amp from TurnTech this afternoon since my battery just died on me this week. So far great service- I emailed them today and he answered within a couple hours and said he'd have it to me by Wed. I will update when it gets here.

I was outside practicing how to kick start my EFI TE 450 today...finally got it...similar to what Dirtdame does!

That's pretty much what I do except I miss out the part with the decomp lever pulled. It usually starts first kick or at worst second. Mine is the 09 EFI model though, so maybe not surprising if it needs a slightly different technique - whatever works is good!

Still true with mine that sometimes the kickstart works better than the estart after a stall or tipover; the estart turns over the motor pretty strongly but it can take a while for it to fire where it fires more quickly off the kickstart for some reason.

battery was stuffed and regulator wasnt working , cleaned it up and was then throwing 18-19v into it ! not good so after a bit of messing about, new battery and regulator.. all sweet now.. but added fan for those moments when a boil is imminent (cost 25 bucks all up inc switch and fan/wire etc)... and awaiting y piece to come from motorsportz in america.. which is taking its time to be honest but seemingly a great upgrade for the stock plastic T piece from the engine to rads..
