Knee pads especially, i caught a jagged rock on the knee cap today it was hidden by a bunch of ferns and my knee took the full impact stopping me and the bike. The rock went right through my current kneepad and smashed my knee pretty bad.

Any recommendations? theres so many out there to choose from.

    Thanks.

I don't know anything about knee pads, but I hope you are alright. A smashed knee is bad.

I have a set of Asterix (sp?) that I like but I did have a couple of small plastic parts break which was a bit of a bummer. I find them quite comfortable once they are adjusted and look to provide quite good protection from twists as well as direct impact.

    Hope you heal up fast!

I have the same knee pads as Hammer recommends only marketed by MSR.

They are the most comfortable knee guards I have ever worn.

Sorry about that. It can't be too bad though, if your posting. I fractured mine in 4 parts and it was the most painful thing I ever felt. It felt like I had an axe buried in my leg. I hope it heals up fast.

    Ewww, that doesn't sound good.

I'm thinking hockey pads are going to be waaayy to long and you'll have difficulty buckling your boots. You don't need them to run down to your ankle.
Being the hypocrite I am I use hockey pads :D ......... they are my son's that he used as a 7 yr old. They are youth and believe them to be 11 or 12" long. They stick down a little more than half way down my shin and the knee is plenty big enough. I've eyed up some Thor pads but really don't have complaints about the Nike hockey pads so I'll wait til I splurdge for some nice braces like the Asterik's

Good info, im going to head down to the hockey shop in surrey when i can walk and try some on, im not opposed to doing some modifications if i cant find a junior size that works. :busted:

Norman I got lucky with the fracture, its a corner thats broken, Doc said if it was any other way it would have been a cast or surgery. I have axe pain if i move my knee unsupported

I had to have surgery, so they could fixate it with 2 pins and a cable around it. I was amazed at the size of the stuff when they took it out. A freaking brake snake and 2 brake pins! My main problem was a piece of the kneecap turned on edge and was cutting into the tendon. Fond memories!

Sorry to hear about your knee.

As someone who plays hockey and rides, I would recommend riding specific pads. Hockey pads are for skating where you don't have the same amount of knee bending.

Also consider that I paid less for the bike knee guards I'm wearing than the price of the hockey pads you posted about.

He said 3 weeks for the calcium to do its thing, and another 3 weeks to fully heal.

Maybe i should just ride in my goal pads.

    Asterix.

They are expensive, but worth it. I think hockey kneepads are a mistake.

You want to protect your kneecap, but also you want to prevent both hyper-extension, and any sideways carnage.

A big heavy moto-boot flailing around during the crash can rip your knees soft tissue and spin it in circles.

Asterix are one of only a few that will prevent all types of knee injury.

If you haven't already, see a knee specialist! (KNEES are very particular.) I cracked my patella skateboarding when I was 14, and my regular Doc put me in a restrictive brace for six weeks and said I'd be good to go for track season, it was a no go, I lost a ton of muscle(that I still haven't regained @24), and my knee was worse off.

When I finally saw the specialist, he told me I should have never been in any brace, and all I should have been doing for those six weeks was strengthening my inner quad(not with weight of course, just flexing the teardrop portion of the quad) and that I would have been able to start track albeit a few weeks late. Instead those six weeks in a brace, sidetracked my knee for a good nine months. I didn't start showing my old form until the end of Cross Country the following fall.

Bottom Line, be careful with your knees, and when injured get a few opinions, FROM SPECIALISTS.

Oh Yeah +1 for the Thor Force Knee guards, great unit at a great price, you could take a baseball bat to the knee in those puppies.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that, Poopy. I fractured my kneecap falling off my GSXR about 13 years ago and I can still remember the searing pain I felt. It seemed like it was pretty sensitive for quite a while after it healed, like if I lightly smacked it against a table leg or whatever.

I wear a custom CTi brace on my right knee and an off-the-shelf CTi brace on my left, and they have built-in knee pads that are great. Big bucks, but I've had both ACL's surgically repaired, so...:excuseme:

When doing some dualsporting in the summer, I wear a pair of super-vented Fox knee/shin guards. I'm not generally a fan of Fox gear for off-road applications, as it seems most of their stuff is geared towards the less demanding world of MX, but these guards have been really durable and protective. I have a hard time dealing with the heat when riding and the ventilation works much better than I'd hoped.

Get well soon and good luck in your quest for the perfect knee protection. It's worth every penny you'll pay.
